Originally posted by Strong Bad I want to focus in on this statement. There is data that has been interpreted as being evidence of homosexuality being biological ... those who have done the interpreted of that data are biased (as is everyone). Those people who made that interpretation earn a living from getting their ideas funded. If they make the claim that they are on the right track it is more likely that their funding will continue, maybe even increase instead of decreasing or even stopping all together.
I am not saying that testing should stop. I am saying that the interpretation of the data is questionable.
SAme with the other discussion we had.
Nice!

No I didn't.
This is the last time I will respond to any of your posts. You twist everything around constantly Strong Bad. It really is annoying. When did I quote it as evidence. If you are saying that I did, you are lying.

So why would anyone logical choose to be gay, Shawn?
Ever guy here has sat in a lockerroom and heard the gay jokes and all that. Why would anyone choose to be an outcast, choose to be murdered, or any of the extremely terrible outcomes that many homosexuals have suffered through.
That's not logical, rational, or intelligent.
Hmm....Read the first sentence. It was a question NOT EVIDENCE.

You say that there is some evidence but it is not totally conclusive. I would say that there is not enough evidence to even justify using the word "conclusive." All they have is a couple of studies that suggest that homosexuality might be biological.
I strongly dissagree with you on this one. First of all, nobody has to put the biological theory on the weak ground. It is already as weak as it can be.
Now, I think that former homosexuals' testimony constitutes very strong evidence that homosexuality is a choice. To speak in legal terms, they are "expert witnesses." They know lot more about that issue than you and I combined.
Stefan
so former homosexual's testimony that agrees with your position stands on stronger ground then former homosexual's testimony that doesn't agree with you?
i dont know if it is biological or not, i dont really care, my cousin who happens to be gay was never once attracted to females, i do not know why. from the time when i was about 11 and i started to remark about women's physique i noticed that he couldn't care less. does that make it biological? does it mean that he chose not to notice women because he decided when he was a preteen that he was going to be gay? i dont know, nor do i really care.
in a country that claims in its constitution that there are rights that every person within its boundaries deserve, i find it very hypocritical to have a law against to people of legal age of the same sex having intimate moments behind closed doors.

Former homosexuals saying that their homosexuality was biological? Can you explain that to me? If it is biological it can not be changed. So, how do you get a former homo to say that it was biological? I mean, how in the world did he stop being gay? It's not like you can increase the level of lithium in the brain, and homo turns straight.

I read just fine thx. I'm not twisting your words around. I am just pointing what you say in a logical manner.
I have a different theory as to why you no longer wish to respond to my posts.
Did you use it as scientific irrefutable evidence? No. Although you did use it as a convincing point of logic.

If homosexuality is biological why are those individuals who claim homosexuality is biological why are they former homosexuals?
I have not read anyone ever saying that 2 people are not free to make the choice of homosexuality. I see two sides to this debate that deal with reasoning for homosexual behavior.

[i dont quite understand the wording of this question, all i am saying is that both sides have equal ground on the argument. stefan made the point that he knows a few homosexuals that claim that it is all based on choice. i think krang has made the statement that he knows homosexuals who claim that it is biological or in their nature. i think that both sides have equal amount of weight behind them.
I have not read anyone ever saying that 2 people are not free to make the choice of homosexuality. I see two sides to this debate that deal with reasoning for homosexual behavior.
The main point behind this thread was the supreme court making the claim that laws against sodomy are unconstitutional. i was just stating my opinion on the decision. as for this debate on reasoning for homosexual behavior i think it is pretty much a waste of time. whether or not you believe that homosexual is choice or biological does not make homosexuality go away. in fact i think that the idea that there is a cause for homosexual behavior leads some people to a conclusion that homosexuality is some sort of curse or disease, a disorder that can be cured with drugs or therapy. i think i disagree with that more than anything.

Not to throw a huge "monkey" wrench into the works here, but I was thinking about this earlier today...
2nd Law of Thermodynamics - what else am I going to think about in the middle of a long weekend? This states that everything moves from order to disorder - ie, things eventually wear out and break down until they no longer function. In a closed system - once the usuable energy is gone - that's it - nothing left.
So what does this have to do with our debate? Well, from the theistic point of view I can almost see how this could be biological but only from this standpoint. Granted I haven't thougth about this entirely all the way through - but here is another angle that I'll put forth. At the time of Creation - everything was in a high order of stability and functionality. However, taking into account the 2nd Law of Thermo (2LT) - everything breaks down eventually. Applied to the Homo Sapiens genetic code - this would also mean that as the DNA is copied down from parent to child over numerous generations that eventually the DNA would show signs of coming under the effects of the 2LT.
If you owned an original of a manuscript by your favorite author and made a copy of it and then took that copy and made a copy of it and so on and so forth - eventually the copy would be so degraded that it would be illegible.
Applied to DNA - our genetic code - our most basic makeup - certain people would be born with certian biological dispositions which could incapsulate their sexual preferences.
Having stated that, the Bible teachs against the practice of homosexuality - which means that God didn't create Adam and Eve with these tendencies, just as he didn't create them with the tendency to do Evil, to Murder or to Sin in any of the various ways that we've invented over the course of history. However, just because sinning and evil and fleshly desires are now part of our current makeup we are still not excused from that behavior because of some genetic disposition. Rather we are told to exert self-discipline and will through love in order to overcome.
I don't have a bent to homosexual tendencies - but I do have other sinful cravings that I must struggle with (ie - deny) in order to keep myself holy and pure. Homosexuals may not fight the same sinful battles that I do, but by the same token - under the theistic view - they are also required to keep those cravings under control (ie - deny) in order to present themselves holy and pure to God as well.
So then - if it is biological, it wasn't from original design but rather the 2LT being applied to DNA which should not be exempt from being considered. This view which I'm putting forth also goes against macro-evolution in the sense that since we start at a high order and more to disorder we cannot at the same time evolve to a higher, fitter state than we were previously.
Alright - fire away...
Shawn

That's an interesting theory. I'll need a while to think it through. In a way, it makes sense, but in another way, I think we are getting into a dangerous territory.
I mean, it definitelly offers a possible explanation, but since there is no evidence that homosexuality is genetic, I don't think it's necessary. Now if they prove that it is genetic, then it becomes a very good explanation.

Well, I'm still on the behavioral side of the fence on this, but like I said it was just something that I was thinking of and if anyone has any objections or agrees with it I'm all for listening. It was just something I thought I'd throw out there.

Quit saying there is no evidence Stefan.
You are insulting you own intelligence (which I happen to respect). I actually looked at all the research on EBSCO last night.
I didn't get to finish, but I conclude that there is evidence, but not conclusive evidence. Basically it's there, but it doesn't prove it. It does give creedence to the idea that it could be biological, but in no way is it totally reliable or enough to assume it as fact.

Then there is no evidence. There are studies that suggested that it might be biological (the most famous one was the "gay- gene") but they have all ran into a dead- end street.
To speak in legal terms, all the "evidence" is either equivocal or circumstantial. Therefore, it can not be treated as "evidence."
Every judge would throw that evidence out of his courtroom in two minutes. I do the same thing.

I already have read about this study Stefan, so you don't have to be condescending.
