America has not ordered a new nuclear power plant since the 1970s. Bush said that France has built 58 plants in the same period and today France gets more than 78 percent of its electricity from nuclear power.
"It's time for America to start building again," he said.

I heard something on the radio about along these lines a few weeks ago when they were talking about how high prices were for fossil fuels. They said that the majority of oil used in this country actually goes to create electricity in power plants, and not to be used in cars. Thats pretty amazing. That isn't necessarily true out west where we have a bunch of hydro electric plants, but I could see that here in the east. Think of all the dependence on oil we could get rid of, and the drop in consumption if we changed to other sources of generating electricity!
He also mentioned that the United States has not built a new oil refinery in the past 30 years - and that it would be a good idea to consider building new, more effiecent refineries on soon to be vacated military bases - very solid idea!
Sounds great, but just wait for the environmentalists to react. They'll block it somehow.
This environmentalist is very pro-nuclear. Many environmentalists who understand the true damage that other sources of electricity cause support nuclear (if properly regulated).
Yes, there are those who the word 'nuclear' is a fighting cause will fight it, but not all tree-huggers are anti-nuke.
It doesn't make a lick of difference that if we built new refineries we could probably do the work both cheaper and CLEANER. Not to mention we could probably do it more securely. I'd hate to think of what the disaster would be like if the terrorists decided to do something in the oil refinery areas near Houston.
We would be moving in a more environmentally favorable direction. But the idea of a new oil refinery in this country is dangerous to that faction. They'll go nuts trying to stop it and bad mouth it. The environmental lobby in this country is out of control.

I don't think nuclear is the same problem to the enviromentalists as much as the idea of new oil refineries.
