Should the United States pursue a space weapons program?
This is the poll on CNN. No is winning 55-45%
It is ashame how weak our nation has become. These people honestly believe if we do not pursue a space weopons program that China, Britain, Russia will just say "Oh wow the evil empire of the United States wants world peace so we will not try to build new weopons either."
The only thing that would happen if we did not pursue these new age weopons is that some other countries would have a greater technology than us. We would lose power, position, and eventually land and lives.

I feel secure with the 10,000 nuc-u-lar warheads we still have - land, sea and air based.
Now if the planet Earth would work together on a space based system to defend against asteroids and comets on Earth intercepting paths...

again those are great if other countries do not decide to build a space program to shoot them down before they get 10 feet off the launch pad. then what are you left with?
10,000 tubes of environment-dmaging waste. Wow. I feel much better.

This would be a waste of tax money and a invitation to agression against the US. Really, what other country is going to build a space weapons program? We can already blow up the Earth as many times as necessary to satisfy all the Generals and Majors who love these wargames so much.

even our miltary/industrial complex can only shoot down 1 in 3 missiles - when they KNOW the launch time, angle and desination BEFOREHAND.

The benefits of having a space weapons programs are that all the money to fund it would be spent in the US which would create jobs (instead of sending all the money to foreign countries) and the many new commercially usefull products it would produce. Look at all the good that has come out of the current space program.
I never have a problem spending for weapons or military as long as that money is spent in the US.

I don't mind high tech govt jobs programs.
I'd prefer they went to repairing our highway and bridge and dam infrastructure.
Star Wars is a nice technocratic dream.

RC, welfare is when you give money to people for doing nothing other than the fact that they are alive.
When you pay someone to do a job, they become a useful citizen, pay taxes and spend those dollars to support the economy. In turn, the taxes they pay and the money they spend create other jobs and the cycle repeats itself.
Big difference from a welfare program.

That would be so cool!!
:Icomebacktoreality:
I do not have a problem with it. We stay a step ahead of everyone else. The way it should be IMO.

Staying a "step ahead" indicates that others are or will be working on it as well. Again, what other Nation will be building a space weapons program?

If we wait until someone else is working on one, then we wouldn't be a step ahead, would we?
I don't really see a need for one right now, though. If a nuke is detonated in the US it won't be lobbed at us from accross an ocean. Someone will place it in a building or a neighborhood or a school and walk away.
