Could it be that shopping at discount chain Wal-mart actually costs you more money overall than you save?
When you consider that most Wal-mart workers do not have benefits, earn so little that they not only do not PAY taxes, but get earned income credit, have no health care - all and all a huge drain on our tax dollars that a company like Kroger/Safeway/Albertsons does not do - is Wal-mart bad for America? IS this a case where un-regulated capitalism is bad? And should we make Wal-mart responsible for the full costs (i.e. health insurance for its employees that the taxpayers are now picking up)?
And I would love to see companies that treat their employees like crap, be forced to pick up the bill.

Personally, I try to avoid Wal-mart like the plague!
Any coincidence this is from the Twin Cities? You know, where Target is headquartered? LOL
Actually, I prefer Target, their stores are nicer, cleaner and generally the staff is much more intelligent. I personally know a manager at Target very well and it seems they take care of their people pretty well.
The problem is, all these tax ramifications...well they are invisible at the checkout line where Walmart pricing is so adored. That is where people are sold...when they open their wallets. I fully admit I shop at Walmart because groceries are cheaper among other items.
Being a person who works in the financial industry, this is why alot of unions have become so powerful. Companies like Walmart do in fact "exploit" their employees and do not offer much in the way of benefits. This is a breeding ground for unions...although up to now, unions have been held at bay.
Let us not forget the recent crackdown on Walmart hiring illegals for the more menial labor around the stores.

Good point about the article's home - didn't even think about that.
They just opened a new Target Greatland (on Oct 12) located just south of the Chandler Fashion Mall.
And the one on McClintock and Baseline is nearly finished being completely overhauled (they even have some groceries now).
And directly east of MCC, where the ToysRUs and Wards used to be, they are building a huge Target.
We shop there because of their nice clean stores with great prices and no alcohol or cigarette sales. Nothing like waiting in line at WalMart/Safeway/K-Mart, etc while the cashier runs off to grab somebody some smokes, then run back because they grabbed the wrong pack, etc.
We've been to nearly every Target in the state and make regular stops at the Target located at I-10 and Francisquito Rd in Baldwin Park, CA on all our Cali trips. It's become a tradition.

Is that a hobby of yours? Do you keep a list of Targets visited, and Targets left to go? Is your dream vacation a trip to Minneapolis to Target Headquarters?
From the looks of it, maybe we can get Target to sponser the board!!

Don't make me break out the list.

I prefer Target as well. As a starving student, Target gives me affordable alternatives to shopping at pricer stores. When I need an appliance or any other houseware, I buy it at Target.

I love walmart. Here in Seattle the closest Super Walmart is 2 hours away. I make the trip once a month to stock up on non-perishables/frozen groceries because even considering the gas prices its just amazingly cheaper. During the next month I only buy things at regular grocery stores that are on sale or at Costco/Sam's Club which are alot closer to me.
Last I checked, I paid the same amount of taxes regardless, a bit less this year thanks to Bush. I would rather my taxes go to pay for uneducated, bottom of the barrel Walmart employees then given to welfare layabouts. But to be honest, I don't really care one way or another, since they both represent money spent into the economy and that high propensity to spend is what gives us astronomical GDPs compared to the rest of the world.
The only thing that I dislike about Walmart is the large amount of chinese products they stock. I guess that is a product of China's most favorable nation trade status. To beat Walmart you will have to increase trade tarriffs and create a more hostile climate for foriegn goods. That or get Americans to suddenly care about service over price. That is the fundamental shift in American consumers these days is that price is greater then anything else generally speaking. The lower the prices you offer the more competitive you will be but that is just common sense.
Anyways, go Walmart the epitomy of capitalism. In this country as a business you have to adapt or die. The mom & pops are dying because they can't compete and smiling service just isn't worth a 20-30% markup on prices.
And how is your state's budget? State Medicaid in the black, or a big drain on the state budget. Wal-mart made $6 billion last year, mostly due to it's low cost structure. Unfortunately, that cost structure is dependent on passing on some of the costs that a company would normally pay (benefits) to the taxpayer.
Notice how Wal-mart, which fueled it's major expansion in the 80's on a "Buy American" campaign. never uses that phrase anymore? Probably because Wal-mart is the nation's largest importer of goods.

No, no, no, and no, and did I say NO.
If they don't like it, they can get another job.

I don't even consider it a store as much as I consider it a playground for the parents too poor to buy their kids toys.
Here in AZ, Walmarts are dirty, messy, disgusting armpits. They have security driving around in their cramped parking lots because the dregs love to go car shopping there.
The toy aisles are run over by little mongrels whose parents let them run wild, while mommy shops for the newest sweat-shop produced clothes.
Mommy has so many kids she can't even watch a
Have you even seen this schitt???
They should have a new slogan. "Come to Wal-Mart, where you can dump your kids off and let them tear apart all the toy boxes while you shop".
If I had any film-making skill at all I'd do a documentary on it.
I'd rather go to a baseball game with Roseanne Barr before I'd go there.
I shop at Walmart sometimes.
If the workers don't like the way they're treated, they can.... organize and strike - I will not cross! An injury to one is an injury to ALL. Where are the Wobblies?
(just some good old American agitation)
