How did the Democratic Party get here? How did the party of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy drift so far from the foreign policy and national security principles and policies that were at the core of its identity and its purpose?
Beginning in the 1940s, the Democratic Party was forced to confront two of the most dangerous enemies our nation has ever faced: Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. In response, Democrats under Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy forged and conducted a foreign policy that was principled, internationalist, strong and successful.
This was the Democratic Party that I grew up in - a party that was unhesitatingly and proudly pro-American, a party that was unafraid to make moral judgments about the world beyond our borders. It was a party that understood that either the American people stood united with free nations and freedom fighters against the forces of totalitarianism, or that we would fall divided.
This was the Democratic Party of Harry Truman, who pledged that “it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.”
And this was the Democratic Party of John F. Kennedy, who promised in his inaugural address that the United States would “pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of freedom.”
This worldview began to come apart in the late 1960s, around the war in Vietnam. In its place, a very different view of the world took root in the Democratic Party. Rather than seeing the Cold War as an ideological contest between the free nations of the West and the repressive regimes of the communist world, this rival political philosophy saw America as the aggressor - a morally bankrupt, imperialist power whose militarism and “inordinate fear of communism” represented the real threat to world peace.

I wonder how long until he challenges Chris Matthews to a duel... POC. You arent even a Democrat anymore, otherwise Ned Lamont would be in your position.
Terrific article by a great American! Thanks for posting it LIAC!
THe problem is he is full of Crapulence. If the party "lost its way" so long ago, then why is he still a Democrat? It such bunk. This guy is a hawk pure and simple. He is biased because he hates all muslims and is calling the party ******* because they dont believe we can fight terrorism effectively without out employing the failed, misquided, and horrendous Bush doctrine that he excitedly supports.
LIAC, everything he says is true. Those of us who lived through that period look upon Truman and JFK as real heros, even those of us who are died in the wool conservatives. You hear me talking about old time Democrats versus the new Democrat? It's exactly what I'm talking about.
Now before you go getting apopilipitic, the very same type of thing can be said about the Republican party also. What happened to the party of less government spending, interference, etc.?
America has changed drastically and I'm not sure it's for the better. If you look for parallels in history, we are not looking so great right now.

I think he was misquoted and here is what he actually said.

Totally agree 40... It's frightening in so many ways to see where American politics have gone. Extremism (on the left and the right), has a larger influence today than ever before.
Not sure what, if anything will derail this trend...

He is a fool and a dinosaur.
LIAC, are you saying that "If you're not with us, you're against us"?? I know I've heard that before somewhere....
On the other hand I'm surprised no one has posting anything regarding Chuck Hagel's comments of late.
I haven't seen Hagels' comments, but if he's pimpin Obama - good for him! Who knows, if enough rational minds press on the extremes, we might get back to a functioning government after all...

Thank you 40. That is exactly how I feel . It just seems the far reaches of both parties have a hold on the more moderates on both sides.
