Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger has aligned himself with Democrats in calling on the Bush administration to set a clear timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq.
Speaking on CBS’s "Face the Nation,” on Sunday, the California governor said Americans won’t support a war that involves an open-ended commitment and threatens to become a Vietnam-like quagmire.
"We should let the Iraqis know that we are here until this time, and then we’re going to draw back,” Schwarzenegger said. "We’re going to draw our troops out of Iraq. I think a timeline is absolutely important because I think that the people in America don’t want to see another Korean war, another Vietnam war, where it’s an open-ended thing.”
Most Democrats have voiced support for a timetable for withdrawal, and some have even set a specific date, notes Peter Nicholas of the Los Angeles Times.
Sen. Barack Obama has introduced legislation requiring all combat troops to be out of Iraq by March 2008, and another presidential candidate, Sen. Hillary Clinton, recently called for removing some troops within 90 days. Former Sen. John Edwards wants an immediate withdrawal of 50,000 troops.
Democrats also oppose President Bush’s plan for a troop surge to secure Baghdad, which is supported by the three leading GOP presidential candidates, Sen. John McCain, former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Schwarzenegger spoke in Washington, D.C., where he is attending the annual meeting of U.S. governors.
