The average American family has five credit cards and carries $9000 in credit card debt.
To quote Neo.... Whoa!

Not everyone can handle the fact that the average salary for the nation is too low and prices for NESSICITIES are too high.
Sure you can budget, but when you roof gives way, both your cars break down, and you need an emergency surgies in the matter of 3 months.......it can be tough.
Just sayin'

I don't think it's low at all. That's just CC debt, not all debt. We just paid off the last credit card, now were pouring money into my student loans. I've never carried more than $1500 on CC's, but my wife had $10k when we got married. I thought that was insane, but I understood why she did it. CC should only be used for expensive emergencies IMO.
I think its really low as well considering that we've been told over and over that the positive run in the economy from 2002-2007 was fueled by people maxing out their credit cards and home equity lines of credit.
BTW: I'm another of those who use their CC's every day and pay off the balances as soon as the statements arrive.

I also pay my credit cards off monthly, but it hasn't always been that way. For anyone battling the credit card problem, have faith and keep working at it. Wages go up with experience as does the knowledge that you don't have to have every new widget as soon as it hits the market. The best thing that happened to me was when I got married. My wife was an accountant.

We charge every single thing we can (including car insurance, phone bill, and APS bill), then pay it off at the end of each month. We have gotten no fewer than 4 complete round trip tickes to Nagoya, Japan (where my step-son works and lives).
Pretty fair deal for us.

No interest and free airfare. Just took the family to see my sister in San Diego courtesy of Southwest Airlines Chase and Visa.
