My best friends' son heads off to Iraq on Thursday... The kid graduated from Texas A&M with honors, but wanted to be a Marine. Here's an email I just received from my buddy...
We need to keep all our fighting men & women in our prayers, but if you could say an extra one for John, it'd be much appreciated...
To all our friends and family:
Thank you very much to all of you who have offered your words, thoughts, and prayers lately. Your kindness has prompted us to form a comprehensive distribution list of our friends / family and the friends of our son John to keep you all updated on his upcoming mission.
For those of you who do not know yet, John is being deployed to Iraq Thursday, April 26th. He will be leading a group of 30 men (no women in infantry) from the 3rd Battalion 7th Marines. They will be stationed in Rhamadi in the Anbar Province. As you might have guessed, John is completely dedicated to the task at hand and is spending 110% of his energy unselfishly ensuring that his guys are safe and prepared.
As parents, sending your son to war is proving to be one of our toughest challenges. However, with God and the support, faith, and prayers of our friends and family, we know we can get through it. We are extremely proud of our son and all the service men and women who are sacrificing so much to protect our freedoms. We have witnessed first hand the incredible training they receive and feel very confident that the can get the job done and return safely.....soon!
We are including John's address in Iraq and his cell number (will have reception until Thursday). While none of these boys will reject care packages, what they will REALLY need is your support via notes/letters. If you send to the address below, John will share your thoughts and .... little pieces of home with his unit. In addition, he will have limited access to e-mail.
Thank you again for your support. We will use our new list to send regular updates. Please let us know if there are others we need to add or feel free to forward to anyone we might have missed.
All our love -
John, Gay, John and Bobbi

Thanks guys... Spent the day with the family today. They had a send-off lunch for John... really emotional... lots of terrific, heartfelt speeches from friends & family... Gay (the mom) really tried to stay strong but when she opened and read the card my wife & I gave to John, she bit the dust and literally crumbled in my arms...
It's gonna be a tough period for them and I know they appreciate all of your prayers and well wishes...
John is a superb kid. Intelligent, brave, respectful and strong. Made me feel proud to know him and to be there today.
Kids like him give hope to our great nation!
I think of all of them over there and wish them all a safe and speedy return, I'll add him to the list.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.
