Same-Sex Marriage Ban Fails In Senate

Efforts to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage foundered Wednesday afternoon in the Senate when the proposal failed to garner enough votes to stay alive.

After final arguments by the leaders of each party, the Republicans mustered 48 votes, 12 short of the 60 they needed to overcome a procedural hurdle and move the proposed amendment to the floor.

I was a little surpirsed they didn't even get 50 votes in support of this, but then you read something like this:

Quote:
"I would argue that the future of our country hangs in the balance because the future of marriage hangs in the balance," said Sen. Rick Santorum, a leader in the fight to approve the measure. "Isn't that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?"

and I think you can understand why people might get a little gun-shy.

Santorum is one of the biggest horse's backsides in the Senate - he does not deserve the office - he is a joke, and a danger to America.

That may be a bit harsh, but how on God's green Earth can one compare this ammendment to "homeland security" particularly after 9/11?

That was part of my point - an insult to all Americans.

Yeah, me and my partner walking down the aisle is worse than Osama.....

It is not the worst bit of political posturing I have heard this year.

A danger to America?

I think Santorum's quote was a little overstated but I don't think he was singling you out Jon.

Actually I think it is tremendously disingenuous. In fact, I would suggest that he actually hurts his cause more than helps it with that sort or rhetoric.

It's no wonder they couldn't get even 50 votes.

I must have missed the part of the quote where he mentions Osama.

I read it as a play on words and probably not the most sensitive choice given our current environment. But he doesn't deserve his office and is a danger to America? Now that is some hyperbole.

As someone said in another thread - I think it was ajcardfan - "your tax dollars at work". They new it was going to fail before it came up for a vote - not by this much of course - but why did they even waste our time (and money)?

Was it ever an option that they wouldn't waste our time and money?
