Rumsfeld: Fall Guy For Prison Abuse?

Aides: Bush Upset With Rumsfeld on Prison

President Bush says "people will be held to account" for the abuse and deaths of Iraqi captives in U.S.-run prisons. Yet so far, he hasn't publicly counted Donald H. Rumsfeld among those people.

The president stood by his defense secretary on Wednesday, even as he expressed remorse to the entire Arab world for transgressions committed during a war being fought according to Rumsfeld's blueprint.

Yet according to White House aides, Bush did make clear to Rumsfeld that he was unhappy with the way he was informed about the troubles at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad. Particularly, the president did not appreciate that no one told him about the pictures of U.S. soldiers posing with hooded or naked Iraqi prisoners until the images aired on national television.

I wonder, if that happened, would it be enough? Credibility is a tough comodity to come by these days.

I think Al Gore should be fired over this. Not that he's had anything to do with it, but it just sounds like something that would happen to this poor bastard.

Rumsfeld will stay

I don't see Rumsfeld getting blamed for this to the point where he's thrown out. Bush is already supporting him - but SOMEBODY will pay. I agree that a general or two will get the boot.

If the chain of command is in tact, shouldn't they already know which generals are responsible?

You honestly believe the American public holds George Bush responsible? I think you've been watching too much Al-Jazeera.

I don't think so. I think Americans would be much more influenced by things like gas prices if Bush was not reelected.

If you are at the top of the chain of command, then by definition you are responsible.

So you think the President of the United States should be held responsible for the actions of everyone in government, from the Vice President all the way to the lowest bureaucrat and buck private? Why not take it a step further and make the President responsible for the actions of every American?

IMO the people trying to hold Bush responsible for these prisoner abuses are merely playing partisan politics.

That wasn't actually what I meant.

Whether or not an officer (or a member of the administration) should be held personally accountable accountable would depend entirerly on the facts.

I am very concerned that the facts are going to be tough to come by, certainly with any speed. Show me an indepentant inquiry that has the scope to investiagte anybody in the chain of command to determine who knew what and when and what orders were given/and/or disobeyed, then I'll believe. Until then this looks like a cover up.

Folks this is the most disgusting event I have ever heard of. It trancends politics and parties, it is wrong. If the investigation and political fallout costs the republicans the election, so be it, this is WRONG.

I am a republican, I'm not a liberal and I no longer care about politics, I want to know who has been abusing prisoners in MY NAME and I want them tried for the crime and if found guilty, then punished. All of them.

If that ends up in the militiry then fine, if that ends up in the white fine. This scandal is worse than Watergate. The election no longer matters, what matters is that the US regains some of the honor that we have just lost.
