Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold
by Barbara Stock
2 September 2004
The unprecedented injustice inflicted on the Vietnam vets has always lain just under the surface, waiting for a chance to be uncovered. The feelings of betrayal had faded, but they were never resolved.
Over thirty years ago they put away their medals and their uniforms. They buried their anger and bitterness and moved on with their lives -- and they waited.
Revisionists are trying to change history, claiming the returning Vietnam veterans didn’t suffer all that much when they returned home. All that talk of being labeled animals has been exaggerated over the years. But the veterans know better. They were there.
On the radio last week, one man related that he had unpacked the uniform that he wore home from Vietnam all those years ago. It had not seen the light of day for over thirty years. He showed it to his children and grandchildren and, for the first time, spoke of the day that he returned home from war and was spat on, cursed at, and literally had to run a gauntlet of protesters who threw human waste and rotten fruit on him and his fellow vets. With the words “baby killers” ringing in his ears he was warned by laughing policemen not to retaliate or he would be arrested. So he ran. The able-bodied helped the wounded as they do on any battlefield because those on crutches or in wheelchairs were not spared the profanity and bags full of feces that were thrown at them by the raging anti-war protesters.
Kill the hippies!
I don't blame the soldier - I blame the politicians, big moneymen and Chickenhawk talking heads for our foreign wars that are NOT in defense of the USA.

If ever, EVER, I saw a soldier being mistreated for no reason...oh man...oh man...I tremble as I type this...ripping...rending...tearing of flesh...let's just say, the people who were doing it would be hurt. Badly. And they'd deserve every ounce of pain they got. Ignorant people who don't KNOW who wish to lambast soldiers...oh man...most ignorant people on the face of the planet.

the soldiers never WANT these foreign adventures - how could anybody blame them for f-ed up government policies?
Why did the government not make sure that the returning soldiers from Nam were shielded from that crap? I guess when you sit in an office in DC you are not in touch with what those guys had to go through.
Yeah - Agent Orange never made anybody sick, either....

A friend of mine sent me this article. It kinda puts into perspective what the Swift Boat Vets are all about. You really can't blame them for their anger.

Not to be a doubter but the article din't mention any names, dates, places or anything to verify this. Could this be just another Kerry bashing Republican piece of negativity? I just don't think this happened the way it was written.

Isn't war all about killing soldiers? I mean, the people trying to kill each other are all soldiers, aren't they? The Viet Cong (which, BTW, means People's Liberation Army) were all soldiers, weren't they?
Oh wait, they were soldiers against you. So, it is okay for you to hurt people who oppose your point of view, but not okay for other people to want to hurt you? Others should make an effort to understand your point of view, but you will make no such effort to understand theirs? If someone harms a soldier, they deserve the pain they get, but if you harm someone that somebody else cares about, would they be justified in hurting you?
All that being said, I think anyone that threw feces or spit upon a soldier returning home from Vietnam was ignorant. Very ignorant. Like andikrist, I don't blame the soldiers for what they did in Vietnam, just as I don't blame the Abu Gharib soldiers for what happened over there. I blame the government leaders that put those young men (and women) into those situations for their own benefit. Also, even though there were some soldiers who did commit the atrocities, to attack every soldier for the actions of some is insane. Plus, the reason I'm protesting the war is because I don't want these soldiers to be put in these situations. It'd be kind of hypocritical for me to attack them when they got back.

Homer, I think you missed the whole point of the article. Being a war desenter is one thing, but being a complete idiot and throwing feces at someone because they are wearing the uniform of a soldier of the United States is unpatriotic as well as illegal. If you have a difference of opinion, you can either discuss it like adults or resort to childish behavior like the war desenters of the 60's/70's did. It's no wonder that we'd have an ocassional Viet Nam vet go crazy and start killing people. You spend two years of your life in a jungle being shot at every waking moment and then come home to people who acted as badly as the enemy you were just fighting.

Didn't your father go? I know my dad talked about how he was spit on while wearing his USMC uniform while on leave in socal.
I will give credit to the peaceniks of today however, they at least appear to support the troops while disagreeing with the war. 40 years ago this was not the case.

az240, those of us who lived through it, know it to be true. It was a dark, dark part of our nation's history.

At the risk of being banned, UP YOURS!!!
Talk about obnoxious, hateful drivel. Yeah, yeah, I know you backtracked and went BACK and said you don't think all that stuff was very nice to do to the returning soldiers, but quite simply, after the above crap you spewed, I think you DO enjoy/support what happened to them. Of all the lowlife...
Dont' even TRY to compare soldiers killing soldiers to soldiers being messed with by citizens because of differing VIEWPOINT...I...just...cann't...wish= you were in front of me rwight now...aaaaaaaaaaaargh!
You should be banned to say the least, and....I can't anymore...I'll get in deep crap if I continue. Suffice to say,
