Religion vs. Science - History?
Were there any major science vs. religion battles in America in the past 50 years?

Technically, Roe vs. Wade is science vs. religion. That was 1973 I believe.
Plus I think that Dr. Jack Kevorkian started writing papers in the 80s on assisted suicide.

There were some ...
The majority of the time these cases involved schools teaching creationism as opposed to teaching evolution.
Here's a whole buch of cases that dealt with this issue that will help you greatly

The scopes trial is the most well known about the subject and is the basis for these other cases but took place out of the timeframe needed for your paper (1925). However if you are creative you can mix it in with the rest of the cases that deal with this exact same subject.
