...which is when it does its peaceful thing right next door and it gets harder and harder to attribute it to a very foreign culture, to lack of education, to lack of exposure to the wonders of democracy... it gets to looking more and more like the religion and its adherents. Apparently wherever they may be.

TORONTO (Dec. 11) - A Canadian teenager who was said to have clashed with her father about whether she should wear a traditional Muslim head scarf died of injuries late on Monday, and her father told police he had killed her.
Aqsa Parvez, 16, was found without a pulse in her home in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga earlier on Monday. She was resuscitated by paramedics, treated at two hospitals, and later succumbed to her injuries, police said on Tuesday.
Her father, 57-year-old Muhammad Parvez, has been charged with murder and was remanded back into custody after his first court appearance early on Tuesday.
"There was a 911 call placed by a man who indicated that he had just killed his daughter," Jodi Dawson, a constable with Peel Regional Police, told Reuters. "Everything else is evidentiary in nature and the investigation is in its preliminary stages at this point."
The victim's brother, Waqas Parvez, 26, was arrested and charged with obstructing police.
The story was on the front pages of Canadian newspapers on Tuesday. The newspapers quoted friends and schoolmates of the victim as saying she argued with her father over wearing a hijab, the traditional head scarf worn by Muslim females.
Photos of the teen retrieved from a social networking Web site show her in Western dress with her long dark hair loose.
"She was always scared of her dad, she was always scared of her brother," the Toronto Star quoted a classmate as saying.
Others were quoted as saying the girl wore traditional Muslim dress when leaving the house in the morning, but would change into other clothes in school washrooms.
Dawson said investigators will likely speak to the victim's schoolmates. The father will return for a bail hearing on Wednesday.

Muslim Aids Jews Attacked On N.Y. Subway
Thugs Beat Jewish Group Who Wished Them A "Happy Chanukah"; Student Comes To Their Aid
(CBS/AP) A suspected bias attack on four Jewish subway riders in New York City has resulted in a friendship between the Jewish victims and the Muslim college student who came to their aid.
Walter Adler is calling Hassan Askari a hero for intervening when Adler and three friends were assaulted on a subway train in lower Manhattan on Friday night.
The altercation erupted when Adler and his friends said "Happy Chanukah" to a group yelling "Merry Christmas" on the Brooklyn-bound train.
Adler told the New York Post that one of his attackers rolled up his sleeve to display a tattoo of Jesus Christ.
"Happy Chanukah. That's when the Jews killed Jesus," the attacker told Adler.
The 20-year-old Askari, who suffered two black eyes, said he tried to fight off the 10 attackers, giving Adler a chance to summon police by pulling an emergency brake.
"I did what I thought was right," said Askari, a student at Berkeley College in Manhattan, who was allegedly punched and beaten. "I did the best that I could to help."
Eight men and two women have pleaded not guilty to assault, menacing and other charges in the case. Prosecutors have said the charges could be upgraded to hate crimes.
The Post said two of the suspects had been charged with hate crimes in the past.
"That a random Muslim kid helped some Jewish kids, that's what's positive about New York," said Adler, 23, who suffered a broken nose and a lip wound.

When I went to school we still said 'Merry Christmas' not 'Happy Holidays'.. So the odds of me getting even remotely close to be correct about Chanukah is shocking!! It wasn't oil it was candles which why the have the Minora thingy...
No I still haven't googled it...

It was oil. As you'll see if you google it, you were right about that the first time.

If you weren't an educator, I'd launch into a rant about how the education system dictates what can and cannot be taught; but, since you ARE an educator, I don't need to do that. That No Child Left Behind is some great stuff!
Funny how I can teach my special ed kids (who likely will not evern remotely grasp the different concepts) about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas in a private school setting yet "regular" school teachers are told these topics are off limits. Kinda sad, really. Education might actually promote acceptance, tolerance and, dare I say, some form of understanding. Imagine that!

Menorahs (or Chanukkiot) originally held oil, and the oil-burning versions are making a minor stylish comeback, since the damn candles they sell don't actually fit most modern menorot. It's sort of odd -- the Macabees clobbered the Greek army, but what got remembered was that the lamp to celebrate the victory burned longer than expected. Guess that makes for a better party theme.
Anyhow, it's now over for the year. No more jelly doughnuts until 2008 (that's the Jewish equivalent of sugar plums). Next up - Winter Solstice, aka Yule, with Yule log and wassail. Yay Druids!
