Ranks of Poor, Uninsured Rose in 2003

The number of Americans living in poverty increased by 1.3 million last year, while the ranks of the uninsured swelled by 1.4 million, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.

It was the third straight annual increase for both categories. While not unexpected, it was a double dose of bad economic news during a tight re-election campaign for President Bush.

Approximately 35.8 million people lived below the poverty line in 2003, or about 12.5 percent of the population, according to the bureau. That was up from 34.5 million, or 12.1 percent in 2002.

The rise was more dramatic for children. There were 12.9 million living in poverty last year, or 17.6 percent of the under-18 population. That was an increase of about 800,000 from 2002, when 16.7 percent of all children were in poverty.

You don't suppose some of the rise could be due to the increase in illegal immigration do you? Could the increase in children living in poverty also be directly related to that and the fact that the people that can least afford to have children keep popping them out with frightening regularity?

Look at the countries around the world that continually struggle with poverty and you will notice a direct relationship in the groups that make up the large majority of those living in poverty and the number of children they have. I hate seeing those images on TV of starving children, but it just hacks me off that in some ways it's a self-inflicted wound. If you can barely feed yourself and one child, don't have 4 more and expect to improve the situation.

Perhaps you don't realize that these numbers are based not on actual interviews with everybody in America, but by estimates.

I fully realize it.

I also didn't read a thing confirming your paranoia on the subject.

Perhaps a dose of common sense instead of drifting into attack mode would help you. I guess it boils down to whether or not your able to handle hearing negatives about particular groups of people without running around screaming, 'RACISM!'. Simple facts strangly become racism when they go against a particular political belief.

Great. So I am correct that the number of children in poverty is a greater number and higher percentage in the Hispanic community, a community that has a notoriously high and ever increasing number of children being born to families that are already living in poverty. People having children that can least afford to properly care for them.

Not hard to figure, is it?

If that's the way you see it, Thor, more power to you!

A little too simplistic.

There was way too much noise - from both sides - to simply chalk it up to illegals having too many children.

Lars has a point. The main problem is education. Welfare programs only excerbate the problems and wind up adding more people to the welfare coffers so we need to figure out a way to help these people, educate them so they can find a job that pays a livable wage and see to it that the kids get a good education.

Regardless of the cause, any child in this country who goes to bed at night still hungry or cold is a shame. In a country as wealthy as this one is, everyone should have the right to a decent life. The question is, how do you do it without making them dependent on goverment dole?

We need more organizations like "Habitat for Humanity".

That is exactly what I was thinking.
