Randi Rhodes Quits Air America Radio
James Joyner | Thursday, April 10, 2008
Randi Rhodes is no longer employed by Air America.
The company’s official statement:
Quote:
Last week Air America suspended Randi Rhodes for abusive, obscene language at a recent public appearance in San Francisco which was sponsored by an Air America affiliate station.
Air America Media was informed last night by Ms. Rhodes that she has chosen to terminate her employment with the company.
We wish her well and thank her for past services to Air America. We will soon announce exciting new talent and programming that will accelerate Air America’s growth in the future.
Joe Gandelman, who speculates that Rhodes may have been pushed rather than jumping, has more thoughts.
Quote:
What’s most notable about this incident is that it shows that there is a line that can’t be crossed — particularly in a divisive election year.
Vigorous, even controversial discussions or characterizations could spark denunciations but aren’t on the same level as name-calling swearing (even if, as some argued, it was done to be funny or even satirical).
One presumes that there’s a sliding scale, depending on how much revenue one is bringing in. Rhodes was, therefore, on a shorter leash than, say, Rush Limbaugh would be. But, yes, there appear to be limits. Ask Don Imus, who has had a much more successful career than Rhodes.
UPDATE: HuffPo’s Danny Shea reports, “Randi Rhodes quit Air America after being asked by the network to apologize for her inflammatory remarks against Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro.”
A source at Air America, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “Many people screw up and then apologize and move on. Like Imus. Like David Shuster. Like Jay Rockefeller on McCain. Like Obama on Rezko. Like Hillary on Bosnia. Randi Rhodes refused to apologize for her obscene comments and has chosen instead to terminate her relationship with Air America.”
The source also said that there is no love lost between Rhodes and her colleagues at the network. “No one is upset. She made the move but there’s relief and joy.”
Dismissing claims that Rhodes was just doing stand-up comedy in San Francisco when she made the remarks, the source confirmed that Air America paid her way to California, that she was advertised as “Air America’s Randi Rhodes,” and that the Air America website urged people to go for “an evening of politics and pop culture.” The source said, “Air America pays people to be talk show hosts, not stand-up comics, or else we’d hire Chris Rock.”
It remains unclear who will substitute for Rhodes’ time slot in both the short- and long-term, but the source said the network is looking at Rhodes’ departure as an opportunity to rebuild. “Sometimes it’s for the best that the leading player leaves so you can rebuild with better talent.”
Whether you agree with you her comments as being appropriate or not, I have to give her credit for standing up and refusing to say sorry for saying something she believes in because she was told to or because she was forced to.

Maybe, but in most cases I'd say that calling someone an "effing whore" would warrant an apology.
Talk radio's Randi Rhodes quits Air America, joins Phoenix-based Nova M
The Business Journal of Phoenix - by Mike Sunnucks Phoenix Business Journal
Left-wing radio commentator Randi Rhodes has departed Air America Media for Phoenix-based Nova M Radio Network.
Rhodes quit Air America terminating her contract and national radio show.
Nova M said Thursday Rhodes was joining its lineup of left-of-center talkers. Nova M syndicates talk shows and operates KPHX 1480 AM in Phoenix.
Rhodes will start with Nova M April 14.
She recently was suspended by Air America for making controversial off-air remarks about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro.
Makes sense. According to the first article posted, Many were not too concerned about her departure meaning she might have been walking on egg shells for sometime before deciding to leave. The opportunity came up and she took it.

She believed that Hillary was an effing whore? She stood up for that? Since she
had her trip paid for by AA, she was representing the company...not herself.

You are missing my point. I am not agreeing with what she did. I am just saying is not often in the politically correct world we live in that someone does not recant something they said because it offended others. She is not backing down and I am giving her credit for that. She could have represented the entire free world for all I care as long as she stands by what she says in the end and did not say some scripted "I'm so sorry, please don't fire me" line just to save her job. Her opinion was more important to her and is refreshing in todays world.

I've now also heard that she was more or less looking for an out... that she was unhappy with AA... which makes one wonder if maybe Nova M played a bigger role than previously thought????
I'm glad we finally got the truth on what happened. It was Jeff Farias of Nova M radio that was saying that she wasn't representing AA in any way.... Hmmmmmmm....
Also, I believe Randi wears a size 13 1/2 hat... In the HBO documentary on the beginnings of AA, she was bitching that Al Franken was being put out front in the advertising more than her.... at the time I thought, "are you kidding??? Do you really think more people know of you than Al Franken???
Anyway... It will be interesting to see how long she stays at Nova M.... I got a cyber beer bet that it's less than a year. Jughead.... you hold the bet, 'kay???
