Okay we went to the moon in 1969...why are we thinking about going back right now? What are we supposed to do when we get there?

NASA's $104 billion vision: return to moon by 2018
New crew-exploration vehicle would be like 'Apollo on steroids,' NASA chief says
WASHINGTON -- NASA Administrator Michael Griffin opened a new chapter in the history of spaceflight Monday by unveiling a $104 billion plan to return astronauts to the moon and, eventually, go on to Mars.
The new mega-plan comes amid unprecedented pressure on the federal budget, nagging deficits and what is being heralded as the largest peacetime rebuilding plan in history after Hurricane Katrina.
i would assume they have more than just landing there on their mind. trying to figure a way to make it livable, perhaps?
Yes, they want to establish an outpost and use that as a stepping stone to Mars.
If mankind doesn't expand to other planets, he will destroy himself and this planet. Without new frontiers, the human race will stagnate and turn on each other. Not to mention that eventually, we will run out of resources and room on this planet.
BTW, the space industry has been responsible for more new inventions and innovative ideas than any other industry ever.

Didn't the government say they wanted the deficit to be HALF by 2009? To me, going to the moon is like buying a huge gas guzzling 12 seat SUV that you can't afford because you have 1 kid.
13 years and $104 billion just to get there....the international space station has ended up costing about 12 times as original estimates....I'm not sure if NASA can hold that figure.
Also jumping to Mars is not mentioned anywhere in their plans....Nor is what exactly will the crews do when they get to the moon. The livability part isn't in the current equation.
Kennedy challenged the U.S. to get to the moon within 8 years...and that was before we sent a guy in orbit.
Methinks if NASA (including Bush) wants us to take this plan seriously...they might want to adjust their deadline and emphasize more specifics before expecting everyone to begin opeing their wallets.

I agree 100% 40!
I will say I love Bush's support of the space program.
