What Is My Position on Iraq?
Saddam Hussein is an evil dictator who presents a serious threat to international peace and security. Under Saddam's rule, Iraq has engaged in far-reaching human rights abuses, been a state sponsor of terrorism, and has long sought to obtain and develop weapons of mass destruction. The President is beginning to make his case for military action against Iraq to the international community and to the American people.
The speech to the United Nations was a good first step toward building an international coalition. The failure of the Iraqi leaders to allow access to UN weapons inspectors has strengthened the case for action.
The model we should follow is the one established by President Bush's father prior to the Gulf War. He won the support of our allies overseas, the support of the American people at home, and the bipartisan support of the U.S. Congress. It is important to reestablish that same solid domestic and international foundation of support.
Nevada has much at stake, if not more, than many states in the nation. We have thousands of active duty and National Guard troops stationed in Nevada that could be mobilized in a military conflict with Iraq. We have to ensure that we have fully considered the military and diplomatic options carefully prior to putting our soldiers in harms way. We also have to stay focused on our economy, which certainly presents a serious threat to many of our citizens. Our national economy is faltering, and we have to consider the impact that war would have on oil prices and other domestic industries. There are certainly countless issues and questions to answer before we can engage Iraq militarily.
I am glad the President has begun to make the case. I will certainly review quite carefully any plan for military action placed before us here in the Senate. Your views are important to me and I will be sure to consider them prior to voting on this issue. (2002)
