Pelosi dealt first defeat

Looks like she overplayed her hand.

Democrats pick Hoyer as House majority leader
Rep. Steny Hoyer selected over Speaker Pelosi ally Rep. John Murtha

WASHINGTON - House Democrats on Thursday chose Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer to be House majority leader over Rep. John Murtha, the choice of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, in line to become speaker.

Hoyer was elected on a vote of 149-86.

The balloting marked a personal triumph for him, but also a snub to Pelosi, moments after the rank and file selected her unanimously to become speaker when the House convenes in January.

Overplaying her hand would have been if she wasn't selected Speaker of the House, which she was. This just means that some (alot) of Democrats will vote independently of what their leadership prefers if they want to.

Glad to hear this. Maybe it truly means the Demos are serious about changing the old guard and doing some good for this country rather than settling old political scores.

This also shows that unlike the Republicans, Democrats do not march lock-step with their leadership - which was a major part of their downfall. Normally good/intellegent Republican Representatives were cowed/scared/bullied into toeing the party line, when many knew better.
