NASA plans permanent moon base

I'm accused of never liking ANYTHING GW and his gang of crooks do.

This was not true in the past and is not true now, this for example is something I do support.

Quote:
NASA's plans for returning people to the moon -- an objective called for by President Bush in 2004 -- includes establishing a permanent outpost that would be used to prepare for a manned trip to Mars. The moon base would be at either the north or south pole of the moon, NASA Deputy Administrator Shana Dale said during a news conference Monday at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

This should be in the top 3 of national priority for several reasons.

1) As the Stephen Hawkins said, to ensure human survival we must populate another planet.

2) The country who owns access to space, the moon and any other advancements will be more significant in terms of power than gaining nuclear technology.

3)The moon is a terrific launching base for futher exporation and will do miracles for drug and technology advancement.

A lot more than that but enough to put it way ahead of abortiong or healthcare in terms of importance.

i have a question

back in the 70's, etc..., what was the major reasons for the shutdown of the appollo program? lack of money and public support?

i remember reading, i think, that after that nasa made skylab out of spare parts just to survive?

i would love to pump big time money into nasa to get man on moon and mars and beyond.

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/ex.../why_moon.html

nasa lists the 6 major reasons for going back to the moon:

Human Civilization
Extend human presence to the Moon to enable eventual settlement.

Scientific Knowledge
Pursue scientific activities that address fundamental questions about the history of Earth, the solar system and the universe - and about our place in them.

Exploration Preparation
Test technologies, systems, flight operations and exploration techniques to reduce the risks and increase the productivity of future missions to Mars and beyond.

Global Partnerships
Provide a challenging, shared and peaceful activity that unites nations in pursuit of common objectives.

Economic Expansion
Expand Earth's economic sphere, and conduct lunar activities with benefits to life on the home planet.

Public Engagement
Use a vibrant space exploration program to engage the public, encourage students and help develop the high-tech workforce that will be required to address the challenges of tomorrow.

testing begins in 2 years!

the expected budget that the plans are based on are 17 billion per year

the spacecrafts orion and ares will look like the stuff used in apollo missions

2009 — a first test of one of the lunar spaceships.

2014 — the first manned test flight of the Orion crew exploration vehicle, but no moon landing.

2020 — the first flight of the four-astronaut crew to the moon.

2024 - settlement of the moon

Well, I sure hope that they aren't using the same budget-projecting software that they used before the Iraq war....

Peaceful activity? He makes it sound like an art class or something. We can't even get along on our own planet without endless genocide going on somewhere. As SWD alluded to, there would be a land grab if it ever gets to that point.

Apparently I'm the only one who thinks this is not the best use for $800 Billion a year.

They're gonna send all the prisoners and non-peace-doers () to colonize the moon. That's how it will encourage peace on Earth....

I agree RC. We could use that money to blow up Iran and Syria. Good thinking on your part.

The best thing this current administration has done is been and avid supporter of the space industry. As SWD says, this should be a top priority for national security.

$800 Billion is easy to spend when it isn't your money.
