Justice O'Connor Staying Put

Justice O'Connor says she will serve next term

Washington Post
Jul. 7, 2003 12:00 AM

WASHINGTON - Those who may still be wondering whether Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has any plans to retire from the court can breathe a bit easier: The 73-year-old justice has offered her clearest public indication yet that she plans to remain at her post.

O'Connor replied, "Well, I assume so," when George Stephanopoulos asked her on Sunday's broadcast of ABC's This Week whether her silence on the issue of retirement means she will be on the court for at least the next term, which begins Oct. 6. O'Connor, who grew up in Arizona, has been the focus of retirement rumors since November 2000, when stories surfaced that her husband, John, told friends on Election Night that she was frustrated at the prospect of a victory by Vice President Al Gore, as she hoped to retire under a Republican president.

But when Stephanopoulos asked her whether those stories had been true, O'Connor replied, "No, sir."

O'Connor and Justice Stephen Breyer spoke with Stephanopoulos on Friday in Philadelphia.

Looks like she's staying put.

The next question is what will the Chief Justice do?

I hope she doesn't. We don't need another Dark Age.

Just goes to show you that you can't necessarily tell what kind of justice one will be based on which president nominates them.

as they age...

many justices become more moderate. People become wiser as they age, and give up their most extreme views. Hate filled homophobic christians can change their stripes when the realize one THEIR loved ones is gay. Old racists can realize that ALL men ARE created equal...
Stephan - if you're going to be an American, don't forget the minority rights part of our system. Please leave the theocratic impulse in the uh........... place you came from.

She has been a great judge, who hasn't buckled under the pressure from the extreme religious right. That's honorable, and imo, she is a true American hero.

Additionally, unlike a lot of other individuals on the current bench, she is approachable. She was in the North Valley last year when the dedicated the high school named after her and she seemed right at home mixing with the high school students.

As much as I like Rehnquist, I would like to see him retire as soon as possible. Pass the title to Scalia, and nominate another Scalia/ Thomas clone.

I am confident Bush will appoint better judges than some of the previous Republicans.

Bush won't appoint Scalia Chief Justice, at least not before another election.
Scalia is too controversial, and Bush would have a hard time getting him confirmed, let alone past a filibuster, with the current makeup of the Senate.

the American body politic...

...to my dismay is a bit too conservative, and to Stephan's dismay, a bit too liberal. I can live with that. A swing too far in either direction doesn't last too long. I have almost enough rights, enough to keep me generally happy. There is enough religious influenced restrictiveness to hopefully keep Stephan mostly happy...

So, what, now Ronald Reagan is considered a "Great America" except when it comes to his nominations to the Supreme Court?!?!

Yes.
Everybody makes mistakes, and Ronald made a couple of mistakes.

Yeah supplying right wing death squads in Central America was a mistake. And also arming Osama Bin Laden, that was another mistake.
