Ray Stern was just trying to look at public documents. The New Times reporter went to City Hall in hopes of viewing copies of e-mail's sent to and from city officials.
The public records request included the e-mail accounts of Mayor Phil Gordon, City Manager Frank Fairbanks and Police Chief Jack Harris. When Stern arrived two men from MCSO deputies were scanning the documents. Stern asked to view the documents but was told, "No," by the deputies.
"They threatened to arrest me if I attempted to reach in and view a document," Stern said.

A New Times reporter and a 12 News photographer had gone to sift through City of Phoenixpublic records to find correspondence between the sheriff's office and city officials regarding racial profiling. When they got there, eight Maricopa County deputies were there sifting through the piles, preventing two members of the press from looking at them.
It required a city attorney to get the deputies to back off, and even then one of the deputies tried to bait the journalists into arrest by holding records in their hand and daring them to grab them from him.
The deputies had a right as private citizens to read those e-mails just like the journalists. However, they had no jurisdiction over those documents, no control whatsoever. These were not county documents, they were city documents. Instead they employed thuggery to intimidate, and it begs the question why they were there, what they were looking for, and why they didn't want the free press to see them before they sifted through them.
I just saw this on 12 News.
"You can stand over there and tape us but you can't stand here and tape us!"
The audacity and arrogance of that deputy offended me to the bone. Just a reflection of his boss, who also offends me to the bone.
I have the upmost respect for the jobs police officers do. That being said just because you carry a badge, or are the Sheriff, does not mean you are above the law.
Message to Joe and his officers;
You want respect?
Give respect!

Yeah, he could kick my ass in a nanosecond and arrest me for what ever he wants,
None the less he is someone that abuses their power. That makes him a punk in my book.
This is so atypical of what is happening in our country today, and it sickens me.
O, I was like most people in Maricopa County up until a few years ago -- sure, he's a media whore, but I figured at least he was doing things no other law enforcement had the guts to do.
When I began learning more about how many people have died in county jails -- and how they've died -- I was shaken out of my stooper. Arpaio's blatant intimidation of the media the past six months was the last straw for me. He's a bully who's been in power for far too long. I've lost all doubt that untold corruption has taken place in the MCSO's office, but until the public wakes up, he'll continue to use his political clout to keep any media investigation at arm's length. Certainly no state or county agency is going to investigate him because (a) it's political suicide and (b) who knows how the MCSO will retaliate while Arpaio's in power.

I've been completely disgusted by Arapaio for at least a decade. Seriously, Evan Mecham was a better public servant than Arpaio. And, it's not even close. The sad thing is, he could do some meaningless PR stunt tomorrow and most people will forget all about crap like this story and think he's doing a good job.

The problem is, he's incompetent. The county has paid 100's of millions in settlements because of it. Arapaio cares about nothing but his image. He didn't "take on illegal immigration" until it became a hot button issue and he saw he could make PR hay out of it.

Most are fine with a law-and-order sheriff. I know that I am, but because he does some things that you like you are willing to turn away from his faults? Hitler brought jobs to Germany and Mussolini made the trains run on time.
