I was summoned to be on a jury for

a death penalty case. Man being charged with first degree murder and seven counts of child abuse. His name was Alan Sojka. He lived in Tempe. His child died. I don't know the reasons around the infants death. I was dismissed from serving. My wife was in the hospital last week and is on bed rest for a couple weeks and I am playing mom and dad at the moment.

Anyone in AZ or Tempe remember this case? It happened back in 2001-2002 I believe. Just wondering about it.

This is all I could get from AZ Central without buying the archive. Didn't know they do that. Kinda bugs me. Anyway, here's the blurb:

A Tempe woman is scheduled to be sentenced today to 10 years in prison for failing to get medical help before her 5-month-old son died. Michelle Heath, 27, pleaded guilty to two charges of child abuse, one designated a dangerous crime against children, in the May 4, 1998, death of Cody Sojka. Alan Sojka Jr., 29, the boy's father, will stand trial Jan. 12 in Maricopa County Superior Court on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse. County Attorney Rick Romley will ask for

Wow. So sorry about your loss. My condolences. Let me guess, your son/son-in-law (whichever he was to you) is in a Protective Custody yard somewhere in the system (unfortunately)? I used to be a Corrections Officer.

I could never, ever give someone the death penalty. Even if there is a .0000000001% chance they got the wrong guy.

I used to be pro death penalty too.

Sorry for your loss. I am glad to see justice done. I know when I heard about the case, I would have had a hard time being unbias. You have to if you are on a jury. That is the right thing to do. But, when I heard the specifics my thought was to hang the guy.

Anyways...again, I am very sorry for the loss of your grandson.

as my wife said, Cody had been abused for about 2 weeks. he had 17 fractured ribs, a bruise the size of a half dollar on the base of his neck, a bruise the size of a dollar on his spine, and everyone of his fingers, toes, both ears, his nose, and both cheeks, along with his chin had bite marks on them. That baby suffered for the last 2 weeks of his 5 months. had he gotten the death penalty, we were okay with it, but it was too easy for him that way. Cody suffered, he should too. Me, I wanted the death penalty, but he has been beaten up 3 different times since he entered prison, so I can live with that too. Our daughter messed up by looking the other way and so she has 3.5 years left in prison for failure to protect her son. Us, we, adopted her daughter who is now 8 and it is not easy. Hope no one ever has to experience what we did.

Best wishes with raising your granddaughter. She has not had an easy life, but I am sure she is benefiting from loving grandparents.

DBheath, best wishes for your grand daughter. i remeber her when i visited them a few times. i held the lil girl and she held on to me with a dont let me go death grip. and that ws the first time i ever met/seen her. cute lil girl. i hope everything has turned out O.K. for her and you and yours.

i used to be friends with alan. that being said, i could not imagine anyone doing what happened. let alone someone i actually knew. so, i have a hard time even contemplating what went on there. but it is not a far stretch to believe it, for me anyways. not saying he is innocent, far from it. he deserves every bit of anguish he gets from now until his death.

btw, i heard that he is trying to get his sentence reduced for some technicallity.

anyways, best wishes for your family.
