Yeah I heared it on the news where they played his segment...there is just no room for error on the radio.
A radio personality at 550 KTRS was fired on the spot this morning after using the word “coon” on the air in a conversation about Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Dave Lenihan was dismissed after what he called an inadvertent slip of the tongue. Within 20 minutes, station CEO Tim Dorsey apologized on the air to listeners and announced that Lenihan, who had been with the station for less than two weeks, had been let go.
“I don’t know what was in Mr. Lenihan’s mind,” Dorsey said in an interview. “I know what I heard. I know it was reprehensible.”
Lenihan’s comment was made during a discussion about Rice’s credentials to become commissioner of the National Football League, a topic that has been fodder for sports talk radio since the current commissioner announced he would retire later this year.
Lenihan was listing what assets Rice could bring to the league, including her tenure as a top academic officer at Stanford University and the fact that she is African-American.
“She’s just got a patent resume, of somebody that’s got such serious skill,” Linehan said on the air. “She loves football, she’s African-American, which would kind of be a big coon, a big coon – oh my God, I am totally, totally, totally, totally, totally sorry for that, OK? I didn’t mean that. That was just a slip of the tongue.” Lenihan later said he meant to use the word "coup."
Reached at home, Lenihan said he was still trying to figure out what happened, and was drafting a letter of apology to Rice.
"I was trying to say 'quite a coup' but it came out 'coon,"' he said. "I caught myself and apologized. It wasn't anything I was meaning to say. I never use that word.
"I think she's a fantastic woman. I was even talking about if she ran for president, I'd work on her campaign."
He said his biggest fear is that his choice of words tarnished the image of St. Louis and the baseball team, which is a part-owner of the station.
"It was my dream job," he said. "Ratings were going well. It kind of stinks."
Lenihan, who had previously been with radio station WGNU, was part of the recently reshuffled lineup at KTRS since half of the station was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals. He had a morning talk show.

Sheesh LIAC, doesn't intent matter? Apparently this guy loves the administration and lauds Condi Rice all the time. What if he was intending to say "coup," but his mouth got ahead of his brain? Do you ever mispronounce anything? My very Mormon and naive mother can't help switching the F and r in "Fuddruckers."
It sucks for this guy. I didn't hear it, but it seems like it was a slip of the tongue in it's truest sense (meaning not a slip that reveals some deep-seeded prejudice). That said, in the PC-world we live in, some sort of disciplinary action was unavoidable.

Poor guy. I feel bad for him. Reminds me of my favorite joke:
Two businessmen are travelling to Pittsburgh, and while they are waiting in line to buy their airfare, they notice the woman behind the counter is absolutely gorgeous. She's wearing a very tight, sheer white blouse, with obviously nothing on underneath. The man buying the tickets can't stop staring and is getting increasingly nervous as he gets closer in line. He eventually gets to the front of the line, and tries very, very hard to look the woman in the eyes. He pauses for a second, and finally stammers, "I'd like to pickets to Tittsburgh, please". He immediately realized his error, and it mortified. The woman is offended, and he leaves the counter as quickly as possible. His co-worker tries to console him, telling him that it was an honest mistake. "Word transference happens all the time--your mind just rearranges the letters in your head--it didn't really have anything to do with the woman." The first man is skeptical, and looks at his co-worker like he's crazy. Trying again to reassure his friend, he says, "Really. Why, it just happened to me this morning. I was sitting at the table, and I tried to say 'Please. pass. me. the. butter.', but what came out instead was, 'you f'ing whore--you ruined my life'".
Don't know why I love that joke so much. Cracks me up. It's better when spoken instead of written, I'm sure.
He is in the business of words and his word represent the network he works for, if he speaks utterances like "Coon" he is obligated to be fired.
There seemed to be no malicious intent. It sucks that the guy's career could come to a halting screech over this. Looking at the context of the sentence it was clearly a speech mishap.
I think he'll get a shot elsewhere after things calm down .. if Marc Fuhrman can make a living as an author/pundit then this guy should be able to bounce back

NO kidding...He'll probably wind up on a Fox station after this...
If kind of feel bad for the guy, but his profession demands that he not slip up with these types of comments regardless of intent. I would expect the same thing to happen to me if I accidentally made a racist remark...

LIAC,
I am glad to know you. You are the only person I know that embodies perfection. Got to be tough for you dealing with all of us that are so imperfect. You are amazing.

Did you even bother reading the statement you quoted... I made it clear that if I made the same mistake I would expect to be fired as well..
Also, when did I say I was perfect? In the commentator's business it is not tolerated and even one mistake is too much when your voice represents the network, station, company, ect..
Its an unfortunate event, but that is the reality... It would be the same for any business if a highly visible employee made the same mistake.
If you noticed, I did not pass judgement on the Radio host but simply agreed that he is obligated to be fired, as I would expect to be fired from my job if it were me.
So you can take your over dramatic, histrionic comment and...
