Hypothetical Situation

There is a man. The worst kind of man. He has killed over 20 people and cannibalized their bodies. He is the poster boy for capital punishment. Their is irrefutable proof that he has done this and even confesses his crimes. However, he has discovered the cure for cancer and will only divulge this cure if he is completely exonerated for all crimes he has committed and therefore set free. Which of the following do you choose? (for argument's sake we will assume that the information that he has is truly a cure)

1. Set him free. The greater good that the cure will provide outweighs what crimes he has committed and surely will commit.

2. Execute him. Setting a psychotic killer loose on the public is killing just the same as cancer does. Besides, knowing that there is a cure, surely someone else will discover it. Plus, the law is the law.

I'd do the exchange - it's null and void once he kills again.

Set him free, get the cure and then hunt him down. you will say a million times the amount of lives he could take by himself.

Get the cure then say "we lied" and fry his ass. Or if you are adverse to lying you could always just torture the information out of him, everyone has a breaking point.

Inject him with cancer cells.

He can either die from cancer, or tell you how to cure him...

Nice!

But if he's going to die anyways, he still wont give you the answer.

This is what I was thinking Mike. If the guy is that bad are we under any obligation to be truthful with him?
The cops promise stuff to hostage takers all the time but if they have a chance to nab them they will despite any promises thay might have made.

I'm crazy like that! Actually I just try to use impartial logic and common sense on issues and support what provides the best possible outcome. I have no political affliation and feel no need to limit myself by taking a partisan stance because of one. For example I am going to vote Bush over Kerry not because I like Bush but because he represents the safest choice for keeping the US #1 than Kerry does in my opinion.

Anyways back on topic, there is no moral question in my opinion. The man has proven through his actions to no longer be a functioning member of society and as such is no longer entilted to fair treatment. Would you feel bad about lying to a bird or a lion? Anyone who has slipped this far into the depths of depravity has foresaken his humanity and is just an animal.

I would set him free. But I would also allow a free get-out-of-jail card to the family members to seek their own revenge........
