Shock-rock legend Alice Cooper calls rock stars campaigning for Democrat John Kerry treasonous morons.
The 56-year-old Cooper says he was disgusted to learn the likes of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M., Sheryl Crow, James Taylor and Dave Matthews were hitting the road for a series of concerts designed to help defeat President Bush.
"To me, that's treason," Cooper told the Canadian Press. "I call it treason against rock 'n' roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics."
"When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.
"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."
Linda Ronstadt
"Besides," he continued, "when I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn't already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Henley? Geez, that's a good reason right there to vote for Bush."
As WorldNetDaily previously reported, Linda Ronstadt was escorted off the property of a Las Vegas casino after publicly supporting Bush-bashing film director Michael Moore, and singer Don Henley was subsequently booed on stage in Orange County, Calif., for expressing support for Linda Ronstadt during one of his own concerts.
Cooper, whose real name is Vincent Damon Furnier, is reportedly a strong Republican who joins Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., at NBA games in Phoenix.
He continues his own summer rock tour, with upcoming dates in the Northeast, Canada, California and Las Vegas.

That's great.
I work with a bunch of people who listen to Howard Stern and live by everything he says. He knows his stuff and he's bright, but damn I wish they would think for themselves. Stern's rants are annoying.

Alic Cooper is an idiot if he thinks that music - an artform - has nothing to do with politics - Music is an expression of one's self - just as is writing and whatever you do artistically thinking. Never been a part of rock - maybe not being a rock star - which is a joke anyway - but expressing one's self politcally has been going on for decades - anyone remember something called the COUNTERCULTURE and how much it was synonymous with poltical movements during the 60's and 70's?
Give me a break - are you telling me that bands like Rage Against the Machine weren't heavily bent towards political discourse or Buffalo Springfield or Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - give me a fraking break.
By the way - does anyone even go to Alice Cooper shows anymore - what was his last hit - Be My Frankenstein. Besides - how many of the groups playing in that tour are considered "rcok stars"? Hell, Springsteen's Born in the USA was satire on the USA - not a pump you up song, that so many people, including the Reps during the last Convention - took it ot be.
You've got your head in the sand if you think rock songs haven't ever had political bents towards them. That being said - I could care less what these guys have to say I've got a mind of my own.

Yep, and all these groups had about as much political savvy as my 82 year old grandma used to have. Make love, not war. Smoke dope. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Way to get involved in the political process.

Rage Against the Machine is a joke. Every song I hear of them is stolen from hip-hop. They have stole from Public Enemy, Rakim..etc etc. Not just samples, but blatanly the whole song word for word. Maybe no one else notices, but I have been listening to hip-hop since 1984. <<side note>> Oh ya, Andre 3000 of Outkast, is rumored to be performing at the Republican convention next week.

Point taken, but I think Cooper's question is "why should an artist or an art form sway the vote?". Just because these people are famous, doesn't mean they should be influential--they should be encouraging people to get out there and study the issues moreso than pimping their own preferred candidate, IMO.
