General Clark for President?

What do we know about this guy other than that he used to run NATO and he is apparently from Arkansas? Here is the CCN article

Wesley Clark may announce for presidency next week
From Jonathan Karl
CNN Washington Bureau
Thursday, September 11, 2003 Posted: 2:59 PM EDT (1859 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Wesley Clark has begun building a campaign organization and several people close to the retired general told CNN Thursday they expect him to announce next week that he is running for president.

Clark has discussed his potential campaign with presidential candidate Howard Dean, the liberal antiwar former Vermont governor who, according to Dean campaign officials, asked Clark for his support.

According to one source familiar with the conversations, the two men discussed the vice presidency. But Dean campaign officials said such talk is premature and those close to Clark expect him to run for president, not vice president.

"I think he's going to run," said Skip Rutherford, a Clark friend and the executive director of the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock. "Impressive people are coming forward offering to work on his campaign, run his campaign and consult his campaign."

Several Democratic sources said Clark -- Supreme NATO commander during the war in Kosovo -- has begun the process of putting together a campaign team, including talking to potential campaign managers.

"There is a lot of momentum here," said one former high-level Clinton administration official who has talked to Clark about a campaign. "It's 90-10 that he runs, but he has not pulled the trigger in his own mind."

Gore campaign veteran Mark Fabiani, who is advising Clark on the possible presidential campaign, cautions that Clark has not yet made a final decision.

"He's doing the kind of things you'd do if you are going to run. He's doing what he needs to do to put himself in a position to run," Fabiani said. "He'd be a great candidate, but at this point it's theoretical."

Clark is returning home to Arkansas Friday to talk to his family. Clark has said that his wife, Gertrude, has reservations about a presidential campaign but will support him in whatever decision he makes.

They're already flocking to Clark

Wes Clark mania threatens to go nuclear next week if, as expected, he becomes the 10th and last candidate to join the nine other running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Whispers learns that once in, top Democratic elected officials, strategists and donors are ready to join the Clark Brigade. Many of Clark's team-in-waiting are Clintonistas , like the former president's handyman, Bruce Lindsey, scandal spokesman Mark Fabiani, and maybe even ex-deputy chief of staff Harold Ickes, who's close to New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Also, New York Rep. Charles Rangel has pledged to round up endorsements from House and Senate members.

What's more, www.DraftClark2004.com, the Web site that's cheering Clark's entry, has lined up 200 coordinators in all 50 states, says spokesman Michael Frisby, president of Frisby & Associates, a Washington-area PR firm. And forget about that talk that all the retired four-star general and former NATO boss wants is the veep nomination. Supporters say that's a dirty-tricks campaign pushed by rival Howard Dean who's scared of a Clark candidacy.

Says Frisby: "Wes Clark firmly believes that he is the best choice to be president, not be vice president or hold any other government post."

Opposes ANWR oil drilling, not opposed to gays in the military (recognizing that many gays already serve!)

Gun Control
General Clark is a gun owner and has implied that gun control policy should be determined by and large at the state level, not by the federal government..

Wesley Clark in his own words

He's pretty left, excepting he has stars on his shoulders. In other words, a Dems electable wet dream.

I'm obviously opposed to many of his stances, but you asked for a make or break issue. His wanting the United States to subrogate its interests and defense to the whim of the United Nations (75% of which hate our guts). Sorry, I don't want France determine how I live my life or how we defend ourselves.

I can see how he is a very attractive candidate. Dems have no leg to stand on when it comes to the military and our national defense. He brings a large measure of legitimacy to that.

I think he could be a dangerous opponent. However, his fondness for the UN and his leftist domestic policies are his weak points.

Amen to all that. Don't worry man, he's not a threat. He might be a little stronger than Dean, Kerry and Edwards, but not enough to even challange Bush.

I am not sure about this comment either. While Clinton may have been a draft dodger, Gore served his country.

In any event, I still think the only thing that will beat Bush is Bush.

I meant that he's just as left as all the rest of the candidates. The only difference is that he's a general.

I think you're right.

It's not stopping the Dems from trying though...

You love to group all Democrats into one demographic. Clark does not represent all Democrats and all Democrats don't represent Clark.

Personally, with the exception of the affirmative action issue, I pretty much agree with all his stances above--although I am leary on the whole UN thing, as you are as well.
