Which is why you are wasting space with drivel like a violin smiley. Those very oil companies that you are always so quick to leap to their defense have spent millions supressing technologies and buying up patents to further ensure our dependability upon them.
Such record profits only ensure that their market manipulation will continue.

Yea... I am the great Oil Company Defender!!!
LMAO...
Oil companies invest billions (with a B) in alternative energy programs... Instead of going after them - so boring and so yesterday.... - how 'bout taking real steps to better the situation??

Well they're companies in the energy supply business. They're spending all that money on New Product Development and Intellectual Property Patents so that once the oil does run out or hits peak pricing or the government eventually does step in they can continue to be profitable.
Investing internally into new technologies doesn't equate to development of production level solutions. That would be a cutting of the nose type of move. It's not for the betterment of society at large, it's for their own ass protection.

Why is it their responsibility to develop new technologies in any other manner than what they determine to be appropriate?? Where the heck are you going with this??

Starta acompany up and compete with them.
You amke it sound as if we cant use Nat Gas because they own the patent on Nat Gas. Or Wind or Solar. Fact of the matter is the reason why its so hard to get Nat Gas pumping stations is because they dont have Federal help. BTW that would be the dems (in control of the house and Senate and the repubs that are taking the $)
How is that the oil companies fault that they can buy protection. Microsoft paid quite a bit of money to buy the government off as do thousands of other companies. Again why pick on a few companies in one sector when most everyone operates that way?

You told Chris not to "go after" oil companies for suppressing technologies by pointing out they invest billions (with a B). I simply stated that their investments have little to do with Chris' statement being false. I don't know where you were going, honestly.
I am worried that you're gonna yourself , though considering how much you do it on here.

I'm not blaming the oil companies for doing what they do, I'm not patting them on the back for their research investments either, though. I also don't know how you made the gigantic leap that I am saying we can't use Nat Gas or anything following that statement.
Please point out where I was "picking" on any specific company. Pointing out typical business practices is considered picking?
They can carpool. Or they can stack trips instead of doing multiples. They can walk/bike for short trips and save gas for commuting. They can change the way they drive. They can *gasp* inflate their tires properly. They can hypermile. There are a lot of things they can do a lot of things to lower their consumption of gasoline.
I used to get mad when I saw huge profits for the Mobils of the world, until I realized how low the profit margins are for these companies. They are successful because of our consumption, plain and simple. They are in a high-volume, low margin industry. Our demand is super high. I can not blame them for making money.
Their profit margin is tiny compared to software and other similar merchandise.
Look. I'm not the type to complain much even when gas prices were at their highest level. I just cut back. There are things that you can do to reduce your consumption, but for some it isn't possible. If you can't pay for gas, you can't go to work, you can't pay for food, shelter, etc. Vicious cycle.
Not to mention that most everything these days are delivered by semi truck fueled by gas or some sort. With gas prices over inflated, it rises the price of just about everything. Why prices of some goods aren't going down, eventhough prices are dropping some is for another discussion.

What does it mean to :fingerquote: rise :fingerquote: the price?
