Election Year? We Should Tinker With The Constitution!
A proposed constitutional amendment to outlaw the burning of the American flag won the approval on Tuesday of a Senate Judiciary Committee split largely along party lines.
Raised by some Republicans as a mark of patriotism this election year, the measure passed on a 11-7 vote and was sent to the full Senate for final congressional approval. While the Senate has repeatedly rejected such measures in the past, both sides predict a razor-close vote this time.
The Judiciary Committee's vote came a week after a divided Senate blocked a White House-backed bid to amend the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, another issue Democrats have accused Republicans of pushing merely to rally their conservative base for the November elections.
Backers said the proposal is needed to protect a symbol of American democracy. But foes warned the measure would infringe on First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and expression.
Just wondering. If this is such a good idea why wait until now to ammend the Consitiution? Wouldn't flag buring have been just as insidious - maybe even more so - in 1776?

Wiz, in 1776, if someone had burned the American flag, they wouldn't have ammended the constitution, they would have shot them on the spot.
I'm kind of torn on this issue. I don't believe in constitutional ammendments, but I do think someone desicrating our flag should be dealt with. If you feel that strongly against this country, move somewhere else.
I do believe if I ever came across someone burning the flag, I would be forced to show my displeasure by knocking them squarely on their ass.

I don't think anyone burns the flag as an "I hate this country" statement. If you ask any protester if the hate America they'll say, "no, but I'm not happy with the government." I hate when people claim anyone experessing displeasure with our government leaders is unamerican. Calling out the president, congress, ets... is the most patriotic thing you can do. If our forefathers had simply said, "we don't like these colonies, we'll keep moving" or had kept their mouths shut about the british govt we'd be british instead of the USA.
When you're having car problems do you fix it or just go by a new car? We're the greatest country in the world but that doesn't mean we're perfect. If we cave in to pressure to simply accept everything the govt does without questioning them we could gradually become like the old USSR or Iraq or China. I'm not about to go burn any flags any time soon but we're supposed to be the country that doesn't forcibly shut it's citizens up.

Was I against the war? Only to the extent that I lost some friends there. Being a lot younger and somewhat naive during that period of time, I never questioned whether or not this was a just war. I just accepted the fact that we had to be over there and didn't question why. Having grown up around the Scott AFB area in S. Illinois, I knew a lot of servicemen and many of my friends were in the Air Force. That particular area was not anti-war by any stretch of the imagination. We just wanted it to get done and get our friends back.
To answer your question, I guess I was a "love it" type of guy and didn't understand how anyone could be against our own servicemen. I never felt animosity towards those protesting the war, only incredulity that they felt that way.

Assface, it's not the protests that I mind. It's the disrespect you show for this country by burning it's very symbol. Would it be alright for these protestors to shoot bald eagles because they're mad at the president? If you want to protest, have at it, but protest against the person, not our country.

Assface, did you get the wrong thread? The only thing I said in that thread is that I thought the states should have the right to make conservation laws and the people living on the land should have input.

Actually, I was thinking of when the orginally wrote it for the first time. I mean they were very specific in what the intended with the document, weren't they?

Wiz, I was being somewhat facetious, but I can imagine that people in those days were a lot less tolerant when it came to their country. After having just gone through a war to win their freedom, I can imagine that patriotism was at an all time high.
I know what you're saying and that's the main reason I don't think we should tinker with the constitution. Once you start diluting an idea for small things, that idea can loose all it's meaning.

who's got a beef with flag manufacturers? They are the ones who profit by flag burning. If I want to burn an American flag, I have to BUY one first. If i burn YOUR flag, that's theft and criminal damage, If I burn a public flag, that's tresspass and vandalism. Regular laws keep kooks from burning flags that they don't own.
No- the big disgrace is that we burned about every treaty we made with the "indians", we lynched and often burned the still living bodies of thousands of blacks.
Getting worked up about the flag is bordering on infantile.

Andi, what has this got to do with the price of eggs? Two completely unrelated items. You are talking about property and I'm talking about respect. Don't you respect your parents? You should respect your country also. Sure there has been ups and downs, but think about how glad you should be that you weren't born in Africa or one of the Arab countries.
