Communism vs. Socialism

I'll admit to being pretty ignorant to the theories of politics. Having not even grasped American democracy and the quirks of Republicans and Democrats, I have no idea what the difference is between Communists and Socialists. Could anybody who knows about either (or both) parties give me a rundown on their beliefs and the major differences in both?

OK, let's try to answer this:

Socialism is an economic system. Communism is a political movement that embraces socialism as the right economic system.

They are both based on Marx's philosophy, meaning their goals are :

- Abolishing private property
- Establishing Gov't's control over everything, etc

They are connected and similar but there are some differences.
Communism teaches that the "communist utopia" has to be achieved through violent revolution.

Socialism is supposed to be independent of politics, but that's unfortunately not the case.

Hope this helps

Stefan

Canada and The U.K. have socialized medical systems, but I don't think you could call them Socialist. I believe the Scandinavian countries are closer to being Socialist, but they still have private property etc.

Gilligan's Island was a fascist dictatorship run by the Skipper!

Many Socialists (including myself) don't believe in the abolishment of private property, but in the redistribution of wealth.

Welfare redistributes wealth both to rich and poor.

Under social welfare, the poor get a lift, with the hopes of becoming productive citizens (in theory).

Under corporate welfare, the rich get richer, as political favors are repaid to influential donors.

OF course, we spend more on corporate welfare than social welfare, but most people only complain about social welfare.

Exactly. The amount that is given to extremely rich corporation is sickening. Most of the money just ends up in the CEOs pocket anyway.

My dad works for TYCO. Because of his rich, greedy CEO, he lost over half of what he is worth, and now can't retire for another 15 years.

Undercontrolled capitalism is sick, and explotation of labor is the only way capitalism works. Karl Marx predicted that capitalism would move to third world countries and exploit labor in the late 1800s. And guess what? He was right.

social darwinism

My biblical style allegory of capitalism:
A man had 10 great fields, each with crops and animals in great variety. This man had 10 children. He said: "my smartest child gets 9 of my fields as their inheritance, the other 9 of you split the remaining field."
Yes, to a point, "progress" is driven by competition.
In 1968, minimum wage was 8.00/hr. in current dollars. The wealthiest 1% of Americans controlled 30% of the wealth in the US, today they control 40%. Is anyone here old enough to remember 35 yrs ago when the rich had it SO hard?

Now, the top 1% pay 37.42% of the total tax burden. The top 10% (to which I belong) pay 67%. The bottom 50% of the population payless than 4% of the total tax burden. Screw this, about the rich having it easy.

Oh, and all this loving talk about the redistribution of wealth is quite disturbing.

Why?

I find the super rich mixed with the super poor quite disturbing. Maybe I just care more about my fellow humans, I don't know...

It's disturbing because there are people in this country who want to forcefully confiscate the wealth that people have accumulated through hard work and give it to people who didn't work for it and for the most part waiting for a hand out.

It is punishing the producers and rewarding the consumers. It is counter intuitive. If the redistribution of wealth continues unimpeded, then those who make the wealth will realize there is no reason, no benefit, to work and work hard. They will stop working. Then, what will you have?

Huh?

What is this forceable redistribution of wealth you speak?

It is a fact that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

And I think you might be a bit mixed up about what qualifies as redistribution of wealth.
