Bush/Cheney Mandate?
Did the voters give Bush/Cheney a mandate Tuesday? Why?

Yes, but it's just not fair. If Kerry had won, he would have gotten Edwards as his man date. Bush had to settle for Cheney. What a revoltin' developement.

How many of those saying "No!" would have said "Yes!" if Kerry/Edwards had won with the same numbers that Bush/Cheney did?

The definition of mandate is
1.) An authoritative command or instruction.
2.) A command or an authorization given by a political electorate to its representative.
Since Bush as well as Kerry made it clear where they stand, and you vote for your candidate based on where they stand on issues, then yes, the American people gave him authority to pursue the issues.
Now, the word mandate can conjure up feelings of "it's my way or the highway". I doubt Bush meant it in that way.
He will reform the tax code, SS and pursue the war on Terror. That is his mandate and the people, through their vote, gave their approval.

I accept that he won, but "mandate" overstates it.

I think technically, they did. The vote said--"go out and carry out your promises." But, I think "mandate" is overstated and misused as a term.

I saw a poll today that said most people want the administration to carry out a bipartisan agenda, not the right wing agenda. CNN, I think.

Krepitch, using CNN and bipartisan in the same sentence is a technical foul. You have 2 points deducted and must vote Republican in the next election.

Yes and No
Depends on the issue.
I agree with AZ Sen. Kyl:
Quote:
But Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) warned that the presidential campaign's focus on international issues meant that the election didn't guarantee Bush a foundation of support for his domestic agenda.
"He's got no mandate on domestic issues per se," Kyl said. "Yeah, [voters] knew he wanted some tax reform and Social Security reform, but I don't think he can contend the election was a mandate to do that."
