ASU cancels anti-Bush concert
ASU rejects anti-Bush concertBy Dennis Welch, Tribune
East Valley Tribune
Updated: 2:00 p.m. ET April 07, 2004April 7 - A national tour advocating the ouster of President Bush has been forced to move its scheduled concert from Arizona State University.
John Ronquillo, one of the students involved in booking the concert "The Punk Voter presents Rock Against Bush," said campus rumors are that politics motivated the university to kill the show.
University officials say that's not true. The concert posed safety concerns, they said.
The show features major punk rock acts such as NOFX, Unwritten Law, The Alkaline Trio, Against All Authority and guest speaker Jello Biafra - formerly of the Dead Kennedys.
The Programming and Activities Board - an arm of the student government -booked the show in early February and planned to hold the concert April 16 on the Student Recreation Field.
But two weeks before the show, ASU officials pulled a use permit.
Howard Taylor, director of recreational sports at the university, said his department concluded that the fields could not safely accommodate the large crowds.
"The event just didn't match the venue," he said.
Efforts to relocate the event at ASU East, ASU West or a parking lot on the south end of the Tempe campus also failed, said Mike Rodriguez, president of the activities board.
Rodriguez said the board offered several alternatives to the university to satisfy safety concerns, including placing a cap on the crowd at 2,000 spectators.
But it didn't work. The show will now be April 16 at the Marquee Theater, 730 N. Mill Ave., in Tempe, said Will Anderson, a music promoter for club. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Instead of a free show, however, concertgoers now have to pay $25.
The move is the latest problem for the tour that has attracted protesters and demonstrations to many of its scheduled tour stops.
Officials with Leave Home Booking - the company in charge of coordinating the tour - would not confirm whether any tour dates had been canceled.
According to its Web site: "Punk Voter is a grassroots coalition of punk bands, punk (record) labels and most importantly punk fans coming together to form a united front in opposition of the dangerous, deadly and destructive policies of George Bush Jr."

Well, that's life- If I were in charge of an university, I wouldn't let anybody have a punk concert, pro or anti anybody.

I think it is hilarous that a punk band "Against all authority" is against Bush but will probably support John Kerry.
AGAINST ALL AUTHORITY!!!! unless they tell us it's for a good cause

But let me ask this did we see punk bands against Bill Clinton? Would we? Would we see punk bands against John Kerry?
I am not trying to make a partisan debate here but it seems some people can only see danger from one side of the other but less often from both sides.
Just my unscientific observation.

I figured a group called "Against all authority" wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Kerry and Bush.

Yea wouldn't "Against all authority" even be against voting in the first place?

I grew up listening to punk.
I think YOU are making this partisan. Frankly, most extreme leftists (which most punks are) don't see any difference between Bush and Kerry. Now, they might vote for Kerry because he is the lesser of two evils...but few punks would call themselves "Democrats".

punk voters against Bush sounds partisan to me. I could be wrong, it has happened once before.

To be partisan, you have to take one parties side...
Punks couldn't give a rat's butt about the Democratic party.
