Virus?

last night I shut down my girlfrien's laptop (XP with SP2) and it wouldn't shut down, kept saying can't close excel, which wasn't showing open. I eventually discovered that norton AV both auto scan and email scan was disabled and wouldn't enable manually. If I shut it off, and then reopened it, it would come on working, and then instantly disable again.

By using task manager I discovered excel.exe running and when I closed it and shut off the computer, off it went.

I did a full virus scan with both the installed Norton AV, and the Symantec tool online, neither find a virus. But when I rebooted, same thing, disabled parts of NAV same deal with excel.

Is this a virus that NAV doesn't know yet?

Go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and download Stinger. It specifically removes viruses and is used quite a bit by admins to save infected computers.

And if you haven't already, go to www.download.com and get Ad-aware SE and SpyBot 1.3 and run both.

I see this happen time to time where office hasn't completely shut down when closed and therefore the computer refuses to shut down normally. Most of the time though, the culprit is word (winword.exe).

Just end the process via the task manager and things are good.
