Registry is a son of a bitch..... always make a back up
Are you logging in as the administrator of the machine (that actual admin account) or are you logging in as another user. If you can, log in as the admin and give yourself permission back in the registry hives

Do you have Windows XP on that laptop?
If so try the system restore.
Win98/ME also has a registry restore feature.
