Cable Modems always on?

I have Cox Cable for my internet.

Have a cable modem and am currently running 2 firewalls - Norton & Zone Alarm basic.

Last night I noticed that even after I turned off my computer that the lights for "PC" and "Data" (?) were still blinking and showed as active.

What gives? Can data transfer happen even when mu 'puter is off? Why would they still light up?

My computer was off, it wasn't hibernating or in sleep mode.

:wtf:

No, if the computer is off that is secure.

The lights will be on if there is a connection. The cable modem will still be connected to the internet (cox) and there may still be a connection light to your PC as long as power is still supplied.

Yup. It sounds like I have a different modem than you, but the lights on means its talking to the internet regardless if the computer is on or off.

Shouldn't you be at the bank right now withdrawing funds to donate to the casinos? Put $20 on the cards over 5 1/2 for me, I'll pay ya next week.

I can actually turn my PC on from work via the internet using a technology called "wake on LAN"....

As long as the PC is plugged in your computer is sending and recieving a minimal amount of data. If you have the Motorola "surf board" there is a toggle switch on top of it that allows you to completely shut off all in coming and out going traffic

Hey jw7, I tried to place the bet for you (and me and a couple others) but the only Sports Book we went to was at the Paris (we watched the Preakness there) - but they said they haven't opened up their lines yet for the NFL season. :wtf:

they said that the Rio or some other book had lines, but we didn't get over there to make the bet.

Sorry man.

LOL no worries. Every year I seem to think that the line-setters in Vegas are completely wrong, and every year the Cards dissapoint. Probably saved me some $.

Thanks for giving it a shot!

Does this work even if your NIC card is deactivated? I always deactivate the NIC when I'm not on line.
