Sting 2-0 After Beating Portland


Great game, loud crowd. Football fans should check it out. There is a ton of hitting and there are real fans.


STING DEFEAT PORTLAND 12-7

JAX FALL TO STING IN INAGURAL GAME, 12-7
Arizona stays undefeated (2-0)

Jonas Derks continues to have a hot stick in the early going this season. The Sting forward equaled his four-goal performance of last week as Arizona defeated Portland 12-7 at Glendale Arena. The game marked the home opener for the Sting and the inaugural game for the expansion Portland Lumberjax. Ryan Powell, Del Halladay and Mike Hominuck each scored twice for Portland. Rob Blasdell made 36 saves for Arizona, while Dallas Eliuk stopped 37 shots for Portland. Arizona went 5-for-6 on the power play, while Portland went 3-for-8.

Portland led Arizona 5-4 after one quarter. The half continued to be strong for the newcomers with goals from Ryan Powell (assist Adam Bysouth), Mike Hominick, Del Halladay (assist Peter Morgan), and Shawn Cable (assist Del Halladay). The Sting however took the lead going into the second half with a score of 6-5.

The Sting broadened the lead in the Third period scoring three times (Chris Seller, Jonas Derks, and Dan Dawson). Jax player, Mike Hominuck,scored his second goal of the night at the beginning of the fourth quarter with an assist by Peter Morgan. Craig Conn from the Sting answered that goal only a few minutes after. The Sting furthered their lead as Jonas Derks scored the final goal, bringing the final score to 12-7.

The Jax defense stayed consistent thought the game with goaltender Dallas Eliuk having 37 saves for the game, and Brodie Merrill coming up with nine lose balls.
