Why do we have two different types of screwdrivers?
I was just wondering if anyone knew the reason for having two different types of screwdrivers? Obviously the Phillips screwdriver is the superior design, so why are will still stuck buying the flat heads too? Why do I need 48 different screw drivers (24 different sizes of each)? Why can't they just standardize them into 1 type? Why can't we just revolt against the evil flat heads and join in the Phillips revolution?
This is just another example of what we as Americans accept as reality and never bother to quesiton. Stupid screw drivers

2? Try 5 or 6, then you have the torx, and the square one and there's another couple I've seen out there too.
I've asked the flathead question before too, in my job I do a lot of that sort of stuff and if it's a flathead you have to have the bit that slides down over the head of the screw(on a drill) to keep the bit from sliding out. Much prefer phillips.
While I must say I do prefer phillips, I think I can get a flathead screw tighter than I can with the phillips. Maybe its my technique, but the phillips will strip long before a flathead ever will.

Whoa there tiger, lets not get crazy here.... I'm just talking about what the average joe has in his tool box. I use he torx a lot because of thats what a lot of computer manufacturers use.
Flat head
Phillips head
Torx head
Hex head
Square head
Also, there is a variation of the Torx head. There is a type of screwdriver that has the Torx design, but it has a bump in the center so that a flat Torx will not go into the screw head. You have to have the Torx driver with the circular notch in it to work....

And how about those crazy phillips hybrids that are designed to screw on, but not off. They are commonly found on bathroom stall doors.

Occupational thing, a lot of office furniture companies love to use funky things like the torx or the star. There's the hex head that you need a socket set for.
I just hate companies that make some proprietary tool, for example a lot of car companies do that with the clips that hold on your radiator hose. Just use something standard that we all have.
