The TMI Accident
Looking at what is happening in Japan today with the workers fighting to stabilize the damage to the four reactors following the earthquake and Tsunami to the area made me reflect upon what happened at Three Mile Island back in 1979.
When the TMI accident first occurred there were three plant operators called in to help stabilize the plant and put it in a safe condition. I was one of the three and since Nuclear Power is much in the news today, I thought you might be interested in my involvement. There were only a couple of interviews given out by me over the years but recently spoke to a couple of magazine writers regarding what is happening in Japan.

Wow that's a great story, would make a great movie.
I don't know if you've ever seen the original Andromeda Strain but the end sequence there is very similar one guy running and climbing frantically trying to shut off a sequence that will detonate a nuclear explosion and that's what I was thinking of when reading your story.
You absolutely are a hero you should be very proud of what you did.

Thank you for sharing Ron - since you claim to bristle at the hero word, I'll throw another suitable one or two out there
Inspiration
Consumate Professional
Self Sacrificing
I'm sure you had no idea what direction your day was going when you received that call - just that something serious was happening and your help was needed
You didn't hang up the phone, grab your family & friends and get out of town or skirt your obligations when things were looking tough
You showed up. Not only did you show up, but you put yourself in direct danger and acheived a very difficult task - a task that wasn't part of your everday job description - and found a way to make it work. It's a job that not everyone could do and I'm thankful that they found a man who could.
Not only that, but you were strong enough to deal with the after effects. It sounds like you were able to find personal & professional happiness throughout time and maintain your family. You accepted help, you didn't get lost in bitterness and you dictated how this event would shape your life. That alone is commendable as so many just get pulled to the wayside.
Now you are able to share your experience and take that next step forward.
I'm glad you did as it's a great story to share.
Thanks for being there.

Thank you everyone for your kind words although my story was only one of many that happened that day. My heart goes out to the workers in Japan who face impossible odds, yet, refuse to quit.
As a personal note, my four adult children who are in their late 30s and 40s were amazed when they read these stories and seen what is happening in Japan. They were mostly pre-teens at the time and thought little of the TMI accident. Even my grandchildren are fired up, and find that having a grandpa who loves the Cards isn't all that weird after all. People's magazine is supposed to be printing their interview with me sometime this week, that should get the grand kids all stirred up again.
