I'm heading out there for vacation this summer. Will be spending about 5 days split between Memphis & Nashville. I know it's a bit of a drive, but really wanted to check both out. We are flying into Nashville though.
Any thoughts on things to see, things to do, places to eat, places to drink, places to stay (i'm thinking downtown for Nashville, but have no clue about Memphis)
I know we have some worldly people around this place who like to have a good time
Just my wife & myself - no kids - i'm pretty set on hitting both the dickel and JD distilleries

Dback Jon or AZcards21 are good sources of info for all things Tennessee
Ha! well not really an expert all we did was hang out on music row and drink in Nashville. Did make it over to the Opry it's pretty cool. Never been to Memphis.
Visit Beale Street in Memphis, a bunch of cool bars/clubs/restaurants. Its pretty busy at night with live music(especially Blues)--check out BB Kings or Isaac Hayes club(Hayes club is just off Beale St). If you go during the day you can take a riverboat ride(old style paddle wheel) on the Mississippi--its just down the road from Beale St. There is also the Civil Rights Museum (at the sight of where MLK Jr was shot), the Stax record museum(if you like soul music--like Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Wilson Pickett etc) and of course Graceland.
I live in Memphis, I've only been here for 7 months or so though. I can answer some questions but some places I haven't been yet--I'm taking my parents to Graceland and the Civil Rights museum in 2 weeks when they visit--I haven't been there yet.
zeno - i may have to lean on you a bit as the date approaches if you don't mind - we are heading out in mid-July
love blues & soul music so I'll have to check that out - blues & BBQ are a big part of the reason I wanted to swing by Memphis - also seems to be some interesting history & building structure

No problem. Next month is the start of the festivals here..Memphis in May. My wife and I plan to make our way to the festivals for a couple of weekends, I hear its crazy crowded though.
The Jack Daniels Distillery is south of Nashville, also there is an Amish community a bit west of the distillery if either of those interest you. The tour is nothing great, but a nice touristy thing to do. The unfortunate thing is you can't drink any Jack there because it is in a dry county. They do have plenty of souvenirs though.

You can't drink Jack where they make Jack?
I don't think I've ever heard of a more asinine thing in my life.
