Didn't want to hijack Ryan's thread. I have a crack in my Tahoe's windshield, about an inch long, just at the bottom towards the passensgers side. Doesn't obstruct view at all, and so far hasn't expanded at all in 6 weeks. Am I being stupid to not go ahead and get it fixed?
the reason I'm hesitating relates to Ryan's post. My daily commute is over a section of roads under construction, and that's going to be the case for awhile unless i change jobs. So I don't see the point in replacing it until I need to, since it may just get hit again by loose rocks from construction?
Am I being dumb?

I'm hesitant to replace mine as well.... if they don't install it correctly you have to live with that whistling sound and they never showup when they say they will. Mine's on the passenger side but is slowly moving right into my field of vison

this is only the 3rd crack I've had in a windshield myself, but it's the first that didn't quickly expand either of mine, or people I knew of. Since I'm not driving my car everyday now(we carpool and right now take my girlfriend's Mustang for gas price reasons), I am making an actuarial decision to see how long it goes before it starts spreading.
We have a guy at work driving a SUV with the windshield being held in by blue painters tape. I mentioned to him that the tape is not at all strong or adhesive, by design it comes off easily. he said after he had it replaced, it whistled, so he put the tape there to stop it whistling.
If you have a small crack or pits there are companies that can fill them... The main problem with driving it while it has even a minor crack or pit is that the integrity of the window is in question... You may laugh and say it is just the windshield installers forcing everyone to spend money, but being in the transportation industry I can tell you from experience that I have seem my fair share of window implosions because of a tiny pebble hitting them after they were cracked...
I was driving through Hoover Dam a few years back on my way back from a CArds game. I just happened to read the sign watch for falling rocks I remember thinking to myself "yea right Ive driven through here 50+ times and never seen a rock fall" Well lo and behold about 30 seconds later I hear the loudest sound ever and my entire windshield shattered from side to side and top to bottom. A HUGE rock about softball size fell and hit me dead in the center. It came through the window. Scared the living SH** out of me and my 7 year old son at the time. We were very lucky it hit in the middle and ddint scathe either one of us. I was traveling at about 40 MPH and add the force of the falling rock.

I was on the 101 a couple of years ago, and someone MUST have been throwing rocks from the overpass (around 7th street). The rock hit my hood and then my windshield--shattered the windshield--the tiniest shards of glass you can imagine were all over me & even my kids (backseat). There were no cars around me for it to come from--I was pretty much all alone on the road. It didn't make it through the window, but YES, it scared the tar out of us! I dang near wet my pants. I should have called the police, but I didn't think to until much later.
