Southwest

This came up at work the other day and I was wondering it the AZ-native (me) was wrong. Would you consider Texas and Oklahoma part of the southwest?

From wikipedia: Regional definitions vary from source to source. The states shown in dark red are usually included, while all or portions of the striped states may or may not be considered part of the Southwestern United States.

WHat kills me is most people including my wifes family who are all from Wisconsin consider their homestate and Illinois to be the midwest. There isnt nothing WEST aboiut them when you look at the map.

Its because America started in the east (obviously).. So Wis. and Ill. were west from them but not on the other coast so they (eastcoasters) called it midwest.. West from the east but not totally in the far west so midwest..

So does everyone else in the nation, I think. You don't get more "midwest" (as a defined region) than Ill.

Wisconsin and Illinois are most definitely part of the midwest.

The geographical center of the United States (contiguous 48) is located about two miles northwest of Lebanon, Kansas.

I do not call anything East of that the "Midwest." If anything it's the "Mideast."

As far as East/West goes, you've only got East (the reference point), Midwest and West. For this reason, even though the "Midwest" may be east of geographic center, it's the Midwest.

Like it or not--accurate or not--that's the way it is.
