The Dixie Chicks have taken a big hit lately for exercising their basic right to express themselves. To me, they're terrific American artists expressing American values by using their American right to free speech. For them to be banished wholesale from radio stations, and even entire radio networks, for speaking out is un-American.
The pressure coming from the government and big business to enforce conformity of thought concerning the war and politics goes against everything that this country is about - namely freedom. Right now, we are supposedly fighting to create freedom in Iraq, at the same time that some are trying to intimidate and punish people for using that same freedom here at home.
I don't know what happens next, but I do want to add my voice to those who think that the Dixie Chicks are getting a raw deal, and an un-American one to boot. I send them my support.
If that is the case, this whole thing is spinning off into areas that I am not prepared to deal with - don't we still play "Born In The USA" to get everybody fired up.....

Funny - both of his songs are anthems for each side.

Which shows why keying in on one statement can be misleading.
In his statement above, he was not necessarily supporting the Dixie Chicks actions, but their right to do so.
The irony is thick. It's okay to be opposed to the war and use free speech as your platform. But if you are opposed to those who are opposed to it then you all of a sudden become the "bad guy".
Who cares if they are not being played because of their statements? They should be allowed to voice their opinion via banning them if they so choose.

Isn't the fact that they can be banned also a fundamental right? You may not agree with it, but that's your right as well.
Today's society is so hypocritical, it's ridiculous. If the Dixie Chicks say something bad about the government, it's free speech. If I decide not to buy their cd's because of it, it's not my right, it's me trying to punish them for speaking out and exercising their own rights.
Gimme a break.

People have the right not to buy, listen etc to the Dixie Chicks, just as I have the right not to support artists like Darrell Worley who put out horrid sappy pro-War songs. Both are freedom of expression. What is bad is when the herd mentality erupts - bashing something just because everyone else is, which is what happened with a lot of radio stations.

Just because more than one station or person decides to follow a certain course of action doesn't mean that they have ceased to be free-thinking and acting of their own accord.
The same could be said for those on the other side of the debate.

The Dixie Chicks went to London and Natalie Maines said what she said THERE, not HERE.
Wonder why?
There might have been a riot HERE if she said that at the time.
If she had said it in an interview or on a tv show HERE it would not have gone over as bad as it did. A large part of the problem was that she went overseas and talked her trash.
And boycotting them or even destroying large quantities of their cds is an American right.
I am sick of these celebrities spouting off what they feel or believe and then getting irritated when Americans who disagree strike back in their own way.

Actually I was pretty upset to learn that the Dixie Cow's concert is near capacity for their show here at AWA. The Boss is getting to a senile age, he probably doesn't know whats going on
