Screw people who want to rename Squaw Peak
I realize that a "Squaw" is demeaning term for Injun women, but changing the name of Squaw peak to Piestewa Peak is just stupid. If they change this, I am going to petition 'Cracker Barrell' to change their name because it is offensive to me as a white man.

I agree 100 percent.
Political correctness is ridiculous.
Just like the way they changed "Spook Hill" Park because it might be offensive to blacks, when it was named for a totally different meaning (haunted).
Long Live Squaw Peak!

I will have to disagree.
Squaw is an offensive name. It has no place in the United States.
Would you have the same reaction if it was named "N***** Peak", and people wanted to change it? I would hope not.
Whether it should be renamed Piestewa Peak or not is another question. Personally, I think it is fitting, although I can see the argument against singling her out of the Arizonans that have died in wars.
**Sarcasm alert**
Since Lori Piestewa was a soldier fighting for our country, and you react so violently to this proposal, you must not support our troops. Since you don't support our troops, you must be a commie Anti-American. Why don't you move to another country if you hate America so much??
**End Sarcasm**

Let me build on this. First off, if I went in public and called someone a squaw, I doubt many people would even give me a second look. The word is in our vernacular because of Squaw Peak, nobody uses it in a negative connotation. If I went and yelled "NIGGER!" everybody would stop and look. The point is, not many people know what a squaw is, this is evident when the newspaper reporters have to explain that this is an insensitive term. I doubt they would need to explain the "N" word
To further my point, who is going to pay for the change in signage for the "Squaw Peak Parkway" and all the other signs around the Valley that have the word "Squaw" on it? I don't want my tax dollars to go to that, I would rather see it go to improve our dirt poor education system.

Try going up to Tuba City or Window Rock and yell "Squaw" at a Navajo woman, and see what type of reaction you get.......

First of all, it would depend on where you said 'squaw'. I guarantee you that if you did it in Holbrook you would get plenty of second looks. If people are too ignorant to understand that what they are saying is insensitive it doesn't mean that it isn't too insensitive. It's wrong Ryan.

Squaw Peak isn't in Tuba City or Window Rock, it is in Scottsdale. Like I said, if they have a problem with Squaw Peak, I have a problem with Nabisco because "cracker" is a derogitory term for white people and I am very sensitive.

It's a mountain! If you have such a problem with it than you pay for it. You people don't realize that it isn't just like we can wake up one morning and start refering to it [Squaw Peak] by a different name, there is a cost involved in this....and last time I checked our state was in trouble financially and were #48 in quality of education.
(where is King of Cards when I need him?)

I am not being stupid I am making a point. When I think of Squaw Peak, I think of the moutain that over looks the valley, I don't think of some little indian woman. People are too damn sensitive about things
