Been traveling to Detroit for the past 20 years for business... this is nothing new. Didn't just occur in the last 3-5 years. Detroit has been in steady decline for decades now.
Similarly, take a visit down to the New Orleans area. Not Bourbon Street, but the closeby outlying areas. Very similar to Detroit. And like Detroit, it isn't a new situation and wasn't even caused by Katrina. All Katrina did was expose the under-belly, yet, nobody really cared to understand the "Why?". Instead, you've got our govt's (Fed, State and local), as well as Hollywood using these situations for their own political and monetary expediency...
As you say.... sad.

Wow. Pretty sad to see all those buildings (which look like they were once beautiful) in that state.

Detroit is just a rerun of the gold mining boomtowns of the 1880's west. The monoculture economy, combined with poor/no city planning and corrupt leadership have destroyed the city.

Weird to see all the library books still on the shelves and all the mug shots at the police station. It's like the population just disappeared all in one day.
Detroit's a great place to film that show, Life After People.

Detroit never recovered from the 1968 riots.
