My beloved dog, Majerle (you KNOW she was old with THAT name) passed away Wednesday night, after 12 wonderful years with my family. It's been a LONG time since I've had a dog pass away that has been a member of the family for so long--I had forgotten how much it hurts. She was loved, and we all miss her. I am grateful that it appears as though she just died in her sleep, without suffering. Her hips were going bad and she didn't see so well anymore, but she wasn't sick or anything. I found her yesterday morning.
Thanks for letting me post my eulogy.

Holy smokes...I named my dog "majerle" also in 1994.
I remember my friends giving me crap the next year when Dan Majerle got traded for Hot Rod Williams - asking me if I was going to rename her "Hot Rod". I was like "no way!"
My Majerle is a chow pit - what type of dog was yer Majerle?

She was a keeshond mix, possibly with some shepherd in her. Harley's wife (before they were married) had found her & her siblings outside her work; the mother had been hit by a car, so everyone in her office took one of the puppies. They were about 8 wks old. Brian had a Rhodesian ridgeback that was about a year old & didn't want another puppy, so I took her. She really was the best dog. She NEVER chewed up anything, she housetrained herself practically--she only barked at birds & if something was wrong; never had accidents in the house--even if we were stuck away for a long time, she didn't jump--she was just awesome. She sure shed something fierce, though. Damn, this sucks.

This is just weird. Back in 1996 - I took in a Rhodesian ridge back that was abandoned in the desert. We took it into a vet were he found a couple of BB pellets and took care of the other scrapes. Unfortunately she died of old age last year. I kept the name "bobby" that was on her name tag...which was kinda humorous having a "Bob Marley" around the house.
My marjele has always been a "meathead"...but like yers she would freakin shed 24/7 everywhere.
Really sorry to hear about yer loss - do you have any pics?
No, I don't have any pics scanned. Don't really own a digital camera, so no pics that way, either. I will see if I can hunt some up from her younger days, but most of my stuff of that nature is in various boxes in the garage.

Brian still has his Rhodesian (well, wife kept her). She's 13 now and gettin' close, too. We got another dog the same year we got Majerle, and named her Danny (Manning, of course). I'm so glad my husband is past naming pets after players. I wound up giving Danny to my folks (she chewed stuff up terribly, and I didn't have the time to take care of her properly), and she's in great health. But it was fun for awhile to call them together, "Danny, Majerle"....

That sucks!!!
We have a cat going down for the count (Frodo). Have had him for the last 13 years. Kidneys are failing and he just isn't taking care of himself like he use to. The day we put him down is really gonna suck!!

I'm really sorry to hear that. I feel for you and your family. I guess that although her passing was pretty much a shock since she wasn't sick or anything, it was also a mixed blessing in that we didn't have to see her health declining, and make that awful decision.
Thanks everyone for your sympathies. Sharing does help.
Condolences. I still remember losing my childhood dog, Cleo, like it was yesterday. It was 11 years ago and she had been my pet since I was 7. She was a basset hound and lived to a nice old age of 14. We have a yellow lab now that has been around for everything we’ve done as a family. He’s turning 8 this year and it will be a huge blow to the fam when he passes away. As much as they’re a pain in the butt sometimes, I don’t understand how people live without them.
