Proper tipping etiquette when getting free drinks

I'm out at a bar tonight. Great food, great martinis, great specials. Bill comes. I get charged for one martini instead of four. This is $15 savings, which thrills me to no end.

So, when this happens, I usually tip 20% on what the bill would have been had I been charged properly and then throw in the cost of one of the free drinks. Is this sufficient? I certainly don't want to short change my bartender/server. Thoughts?

15 bucks worth of free drinks equals 5 dollar tip.

Sounds good...that's the way I used to play it when I waited tables. The tips are in the alcohol, if you are a waiter. If you are a waitress, the tips are also in the hips.

I made SOOO much in tips by refilling pitchers for free when they were half gone, bringing extra drinks, etc. Keep a table's alcohol supply happy, they will leave green.

sounds appropriate to me - same deal with happy hour - start the tip on what the meal should of cost - if you get a really exess benefit, then I'll provide a higher tip as well

Free drinks = half of original drink cost in tips

Think about it:

If a martini is $8 and you would normally tip $1.50 - $2, you're up around or over $10 per drink after tax and tip. So, paying out $4 in pure tip per drink is actually a helluva deal AND it keeps the free ones coming next time....

4 for the price of 1?

I'd order 4 more

Tip what you feel, but be considerate. I'm a great tipper , but I don't adhere to any rule about percentages or any crap like that. The fact that you got free drinks is gravy, so any gratitude will probably go right in the bartenders pocket.

I would tell the waiter/waitress of the error and pay for everything I purchased plus tip.

That's what I would do...

Not me, if there is an error, I usually just tip extra. I don't tell them about the error. Drinks are overpriced anyway.
