Pre-K Student Brings Handgun to School

A pre-kindergarten student brought a handgun to school, where it was seized by a fifth-grader and turned over to the principal, school district officials said Tuesday.

The 5-year-old reportedly displayed the loaded weapon outside the Blanton Elementary School cafeteria where students were gathered before class. The fifth-grader recognized it was real and took it to the principal.

Investigators were trying to determine how the child got the gun, Austin Independent School District spokeswoman Carmen Luevanos said.

District police said they will pursue charges against the adult who allowed the student to bring the weapon to school. The adult was not identified.

A charge of making a firearm accessible to a child is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Luevanos said investigators do not believe the 5-year-old intended to harm any students.

"He just took it out to show other students," she said. "Their conclusion is the child was not really aware how serious his actions were."

Guns don't kill people, people do. If you own a gun lock them up. I never like guns and I don't want them in my house.

I'm sure there's a membership application on the way to the five year old already.

Kind of hard to pin this on the NRA.

On the other-hand, you could express your outrage at the very lax penalty for the crime at the NRA since they, no doubt, influnced the Texas State Legislative and Executive branches.

Doubt you'll hear anything at all.

Why should they say anything?

They always do when there is a news story involving a gun of some sort

That's sad. Hopefully the kid didn't have a permit to carry that.

If there is one good thing about the NRA it is there safety preaching..

They have videos for children to teach them what to do if they find a firearm (obviously this child had no teaching what so ever). My little girl has watched it a number of times. The basic principle is if a child see a firearm they walk away from the firearm and go tell an adult. If they see a child playing with a handgun they run away and go tell an adult.

I think the character is "Eddie the Eagle" kinda patriotic uhh??

The parents/adult should burn for allowing a kid to be able to get access to a firearm.

My firearms are not locked up but my kids cannot get to them. This will only work for a few more years. While I intend to show my daughters how to handle and fire a firearm safely in their teenage years I will not be able to trust their friends/boyfriends (ohhh that is going to be fun screwing with their minds!!! ) which will then force me to lock them up in a quick access gun safe.
