LONDON (Reuters) - British police on Thursday condemned plans for a live television broadcast of a magician playing Russian roulette, saying the stunt would glamorize guns and could lead to deadly copycats.

Britain's Channel Four television is paying self-styled "psychological illusionist" Derren Brown to stage a game of Russian roulette with a loaded gun on live TV.

A volunteer will put a bullet in one of the gun's six chambers. Brown says he will then read the volunteer's mind to determine where the bullet is, put the gun to his head, flip through each empty chamber and squeeze the trigger.

"It's deplorable," said Rick Naylor, Chief Superintendent of South Yorkshire Police and Vice President of the Police Superintendents' Association.

"Firearms are a serious problem in this country and this just glamorizes it. If Channel Four have any social conscience at all, they will cut off this program," he said, adding his greatest fear was that someone would copy the stunt and be hurt.

"It would be absolutely tragic, and the consciences of Derren Brown and Channel Four would be difficult to live with should that happen," he told Reuters.

The show will be aired on Sunday, with Brown carrying out his stunt in an unnamed foreign country, since handguns are illegal in Britain. It will be shown with a slight tape delay so it can be quickly switched off if he blows his head off.

Channel Four defended Brown's program, saying the magician "takes sole responsibility for the outcome of the stunt."

Asked what need the show would fill, a station spokeswoman said: "Lots of television is not about need but about what will make entertaining and stimulating programing."

Brown left Britain for his secret filming site on Thursday. In a statement he said: "I won't shoot the gun unless I'm absolutely sure I can read the mind of the chosen volunteer."

Um ... okay. I don't know if a guy blowing his head off in this stupid manner qualifies as entertaining and stimulating.

This is one of those things you don't expect to find in the news.
