I know there are a couple Philly area people here, or people who used to live near Philly.
I spent about 3 weeks there back in 2000 for work, and I'm thinking of going back for a weekend trip this spring. I'm about 3 hours away by car.
I know there are a couple things I'd like to do, like tour the battleship NJ, eat a steak at Pat's or Genos, go to the indoor market downtown (can't remember what it was called?).
Anything else I should do / can't miss while there? I will be with my wife and a 2.5 year old. Most importantly here - what is the best hoagie shop in town?
Any recommendations on a decent hotel?

when I was going to school there I had good success with hotwire and choosing downtown - any of the downtown hotels will work
are you going to be there during the week at all?
the indoor market is reading terminal market - one of my favorite things was to grab some food from inside the market and take it to the beer garden inside the market and wash it down with a couple lagers
the italian market is interesting as well and you may find a couple things to take back to bbq
if you like jazz I would definitely recommend Ortliebs Jazz Haus - really authentic spot
if the weather is good there are a couple of restaurants on the river that have a good outdoor lunch
pats/genos are worth checking out - but if you've been before you can grab better steaks elsewhere
tony lukes is definitely checking out for hoagies
it's been a few years since i've been back and I know many things have changed - but there is still a lot of fun to be had that hasn't changed

You could take the ferry across to Jersey and see the Battleship (which is awesome), the aquarium and the Children's garden, depending on what time you go. They're all within walking distance of one another. Years ago there were free concerts in the spring/summer at the waterfront as well. Not sure if they still do that. Do a search for Wiggins Park Marina in Camden and I'm sure you'll find info.
The Franklin Institute is fun for kids, though I haven't been there in years. The Science Center is cool, too.
Might want to check out the Philadelphia Art Museum as well. Run up the steps, see the statue of Rocky and get a great view of the city. They used to have a super jazz brunch on Sunday mornings. Live jazz and great food.

Reading terminal is exactly what I was thinking about. Is it only open during the weekdays? When I was there for that stretch back in 2000 I ate there almost every weekday.
I've been to Pat's and Geno's and I'd agree that better is probably elsewhere but I kind of want to take my wife there, she's never been. I've read good things on the net about a place called Dalessandro's, anyone heard of it?

Definitely want to go to see the battleship. Its one of my main reasons for going.
Honestly brat. Pat's and Genos? Ugh! Only unless it's 3 am and you're drunk should you go to one of those places. Not the worst, but there are at least 20 places that smoke both of them on their worst day. As for hoagies, Tony Lukes is not my first choice, but you could do worse.
Entertainment wise, maybe take in a Sixers or Flyers game. At the least you will have crossed of one more arena in your lifetime you will have visited. The Franklin Institute is always a favorite for me. One of the most interesting and thought provoking places in the city for me. I love it.
Comedy shows are always a good option! Wednesday nights at the Laff House on South St. You might even catch my act!
