Question

Online schooling?

Hey guys,

I went to MCC for 2.5 years, and am really thinking of trying to finish school and get a degree, be it an AA, or something more.

I don't have a lot of time, being busy with my full time job, a side job and my family...but I'd like to make an attempt.

Aside from the University of Phoenix, which I know is good, but also expensive, does anyone have any ideas of where you can take online classes to get a degree? Or something like that, which would allow me to do more work at home than actually having to go to a classroom environment?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice you might have,

Mike

My wife got her Teacher's Cert from U of Phx. She wasn't too impressed. She felt that she "bought" her certification due to the really high cost and lack of instruction from the professors.

She is going for her Master's now through the NAU satellite program. They have various on-line classes and night classes once a week at various high schools around the metro Phoenix area to help accomodate working people. Some of her friends also did this and they were extremely pleased.

I don't know about undergrad courses through this NAU program, but it may be worth checking into vs. U of Phx or Ottawa U - these private schools can be extremely $$$$$$ vs. in-state tuition @ NAU.

Good luck!!

Experience speaks

If you dont' mind the cost, you could check out U of Phx. I received my degree years ago, and I did not consider it a diploma mill. It was a lot of work and a hell of a lot of money (which I will be paying back until I'm 142 years old).

That being said, I increased my wages 80% within 3 years of getting it. Gotta love those IT degrees.

Part 2:

If I head back for my Graduate degree, I will head to the NAU distance learning.

I have researched quite a bit on this and I feel NAU gives you more bang for your buck.

They also have distance learning under-grad degrees.

Good luck,
--Tom

Best thing to do is just get your AA first ... afterwards you can decide what direction to take. No sense committing yourself to some lengthy University of Phoenix program/degree only to discover you want to go somewhere else.

Gateway Community College of Phoenix has many of on-line courses at Community College prices.

Also, most Community Colleges have something called distant learning courses. Basically, they are correspondance courses. You go there and spend about half an hour watching this video on distance learning, pick up your package and assignments and hand them in as you complete each lesson. I bet Mesa Community College has them and you might be able to finish your AA that way.

The biggest problem with non-classroom courses is getting started. Once you get started and discipline yourself to complete 1 lesson each week you will do well. Most people fail to get started and fail to drop the course and lose the money. Make certain that you have the self-discipline to start and complete each course.

Some web sites that you might find helpful:
http://www.maricopa.edu/ (links to all maricopa community colleges)
http://www.pvc.maricopa.edu/choices/ (Paradise Valley CC's non-traditional learning -- it will give you an idea of some of the choices you have as to the method of your instruction ... my personal favourite is the Flex Express classes)

It might take longer, but you can still attend school without getting into debt.

Not this school. I'm going to The French Culinary Institute. It's a nine month program, 3 nights a week, and certificate based only. Thats A LOT of scratch, but I didnt wanna spend the 40k it would take to go to a degree school, I HAVE to keep my full time job while I go to school, and I didnt want to go back to school with a bunch of 18 year olds.

http://www.frenchculinary.com

Im stoked. Its going to be hard enough to stomach the next 12 months of server admin work I have in front of me. ANything longer than that, I dont think I could stomach it...

Mike - check out Rio Salado as well here in town. They have many distance learning classes that you can take online - I took a macro-economics class from them a few years back.

Never saw this thread. I am in IT...no degree and I have increased my salary 347% in 5 years! Wooo Hooo!

But I don't find my job rewarding (besides monitarily) I wanted to go back to school and get my teaching degree....

LOL!

I can't afford to be a teacher even though that is what I really want to do.

I'm in IT as well and besides the money I'm looking to probably switch careers. I make a truckload of cash but I don't know if it's really worth the hassle any more.

However, I'm in the same boat as you - no degree and I've been programming for over 6 years now - nearing 7 however, I hate school so I'm not sure I've got many options.
