Ok I was wrong my animals are not like a kid.

A few months before me and my wife got pregnant I had a conversation with the wife (cat and dog lover) of a good friend with an infant and she was telling me if she knew she could find "good homes" for her pets they would be gone in a heart beat. The callousness she said it with didn't really compute with me, I thought "what a heartless bitch," my animals are "like my kids" and "A LOT of work." Or so I thought...Boy was I DEAD wrong.

It's not even close, not by a mile. I haven't slept well (meaning going to bed before 11PM and sleeping later than 6AM) since early December, not to mention I had no clue how much stress the decisions as a parent put on you. I remember when I would really get scared when my animals got sick, or felt horrible if I didn't feed them right at 5:30PM etc... now I could really careless, it's not that I don't want them to live in my house or that I deny them all their basic needs, but I just don't have the time or more importantly emotion to care all that much anymore. They are second class.

After hours of caring for my son and being wiped out at 11PM just wanting to go to sleep for a few hours before it starts again, I don't want to hear some damn animal crying for attention in fact there are times I want to open the door for good. I know I sound like a total dick, but it's the truth.

I didn't get that before and I totally get it now, animals are not kids nor are they "like kids," when someone tries to tell me their pets are like kids or tries to complain about how hard to give their dog a bath every week, I want to beat them senseless. And it's not like I want to trivialize someone's love for a dog or cat or bird etc..I know how it is, I know people like to care for things and think they are needed, I used to think they were the same as kids, same work, same level of caring, I was totally ignorant! it's not the same. So I just smile and roll my inside eyes when faced with these conversations.

I wanted to see if anyone actually agrees with this or has gone through this transformation? I wish I would have tapered my pets of attention before we had our son, I feel horrible about that it's not really fair to them that I don't have time to care that much anymore, that's probably the biggest piece of advice I give to parents tobe, none of them listen to me of course. Whatever, if they can deal with it better than me then more power to them. Maybe in a year or so after he starts to be less dependent on us I will feel differently about it.

Anyone else have this experience? I know single people or couples with Dogs or Cats are probably going to freak out, I do want to hear their opinions too.

I thought my dog was human until I saw him licking his butt, then I decided he was a dog.

I absolutely agree with you Tree.

Pets are second class, more like 3rd class. They are less important to me than friends.

The people that really make me mad, are the ones that treat their pets better than their children.

There is a reason why I really don't want many pets in my house. It's because it is hard enough to focus on your family, let alone pets that need constant care and supervision.

I know I sound harsh too, and I'm ok with that. Family first. Always.

Treesquid, that sounds about right. Your pets will understand too.

Just remember an average dog's short term memory is about 25 min. so if he is upset......he will forget about it and soon

Well, duh, silly. Of course they're not like kids - they are animals!

My parents were visiting me (my dog Sadie lives with them) last week and one of my dad's employees was housesitting. His mom brought Sadie over a dinner of grilled chicken and rice. I like Sadie a lot and pretend she's a lot smarter than she really is, but preparing a meal especially for her is way overboard.

Great thread.

The consolation to your pets getting kicked down the ladder of importance, is that to them...you've just got a wonderful new toy that will play pull tail and love the hell out of them. It won't be long.

Ashes to ashes. Yeah me too. I would like my ashes to be put somewhere too. Except I don't know where yet.

Can we make this paragraph into a bumper sticker please?
I wish these people that owned pets that are so incredibly spoiled because they don't have children in the home could read this.
Stop buying human stuff for your pets!!
Stop buying them x-mas sweaters and umbrellas and pillows too!
God forbid these dogs ever get loose and have to fend for themselves in the real world outside the family room....wandering the streets looking for a mattress to sleep on,a fleece jacket that's not too small, and a sirloin steak dinner w/gravy and vegetable's.
------------------------------------
Good luck with the new edition Tree....it gets much easier. My first child NEVER slept....ever. We were hallucinating from lack of sleep.
